HAWKS SPLIT PAIR WITH HAGERSTOWN
By Rick Coffin
April 29, 2001 – CSM split a double header with Hagerstown, winning the first game 9-1, and losing a heart breaker in extra innings 3-2 in the second game.
CSM jumped on top early in the first
game, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the second. Stacy Bean walked to lead off the inning. After Mandy McVerry popped out to short,
singles by Kristin Tucker and Yola Lyles loaded the bases. Melissa Speake, Leah Gibson, Jennifer Brown,
and Erin Waltersdorf all followed with RBI singles, for a total of 6 hits in a
row. Andrea Brady’s sacrifice fly to
right plated the final run, as the Hawks took a 5-0 lead.
The CSM Hawks added two more runs in
the 5th. Stacy Bean reached
first on a fielder’s choice with one out.
Stefanie Blaydoe laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Bean to
second. Kristin Tucker singled to put
runners on the corners with two out.
Yola Lyles then doubled to drive in both runners, to give CSM a 7-0
lead.
Hagerstown got their lone run in the
top of the 6th when Jennifer Beachley doubled, advanced to third on
a past ball, and scored on an infield out.
CSM answered right
back in the bottom of the 6th with two more runs. Jennifer Brown started the inning with a
single and moved to second on a past ball.
With one out Andrea Brady walked, and both runners advanced on a wild
pitch. Stacy Bean’s double scored both
runs, to give the Hawks a 9-1 victory.
(8 run rule after 5 innings).
Stacy Bean was 2-4, and scored 2
runs, Kristin Tucker was 2-3, also scoring 2 runs, Yola Lyles was 2-3 with 2
RBI’s and Melissa Speake was 1-2, with a walk and also scored a run to lead the
Hawk attack.
Erin Waltersdorf pitched one of her
best games of the season, limiting Hagerstown to 2 hits over 6 innings.
Hagerstown broke in front first in
the second game, with runs in the bottom of the 2nd and 3rd
to take a 2-0 advantage. CSM tied the
score with two runs in the top of the 5th. With two outs, Jennifer Brown doubled and advanced to third on
Erin Waltersdorf’s single. Andrea Brady
drove both runners home with a double to left center.
The score remained tied going into
the bottom of the 7th.
Hagerstown had a chance to win the game as they had three hits, but some
outstanding defensive plays by CSM forced the game into extra innings. With a runner on first and no outs, Manda
Widmyer tried to go from 1st to 3rd on a sacrifice
bunt. However an alert Andrea Brady
gunned the ball to Jennifer Brown, who was off the bag, but still able to make
the tag. The play proved crucial as
Jennifer Beachley followed with a double.
Dana Kline singled, and again an alert Andrea Brady noticed Beachley
taking too big of a turn at third and fired the ball to Erin Waltersdorf for
the final out of the inning.
In the top of the 8th CSM threatened with runners on
the corners and one out, but couldn’t push a run across. Hagerstown scored an unearned run in the
bottom of the 8th to take a 3-2 victory. Heather Danley reached first on a ground ball that shortstop
Jennifer Brown was unable to come up with.
Pitcher Leah Gibson then got Kim Twigg to fly to center and Heidi Moats
to pop out, before walking Mary Beth Kennell.
Robin Curley then lofted a fly ball to left field that Melissa Speake
was unable to come up with for the winning run.
Jennifer Brown (2-3, scored 1 run),
and Kristin Tucker (2-4) were the top hitters for CSM. Andrea Brady shined defensively, making a
diving catch in the 5th inning, along with her crucial throws in the
7th inning. Casey McClure also
went a long way to make a catch in the 5th inning to rob a
Hagerstown batter of a hit.
CSM will play a doubleheader at
Dundalk on Monday April 30 at 3:00 PM in their final regular season games. The Hawks will play Friday in the Region XX
tournament at 10:00 AM, vs. Catonsville.
All Region XX Tournament games will be played at Prince George’s
Community College.
