SOFTBALL COMES FROM BEHIND TWICE TO SWEEP ROCKVILLE

April 28 - Down 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th
inning, the Lady Hawks rallied for 4 runs for a come from behind victory over
Rockville in the first game of a doubleheader at CSM. Melissa Speake led things off for CSM with a walk. Leah Gibson sacrificed her to second, she
moved to third on Jennifer Brown’s groundout to second, and scored on Erin
Waltersdorf’s single. That tied the
game at 3-3, but the Hawks weren’t finished yet. Consecutive singles by Andrea Brady and Stacy Bean, and a double
by Mandy McVerry scored 3 more runs, giving CSM their final margin of victory,
6-3.
Rockville scored first in the top of
the 3rd, when Melanie Babcock walked, stole second, was sacrificed
to 3rd, and scored on a wild pitch.
CSM answered back in the bottom of the third when Erin Waltersdorf led
off the inning with a single and moved to second when the ball was misplayed by
the left fielder. She moved to third on
an infield out, and scored on Mandy McVerry’s double, her first of two.
The Hawks took a brief led with a
run in the 4th. Leah Gibson
walked, moved to second on an error by the pitcher that also allowed Jennifer
Brown to reach base, and scored on Erin Waltersdorf’s RBI single.
The Knights grabbed the lead again
with 2 runs in the top of the 5th.
With one out, Melanie Babcock singled, then stole her second base of the
day. Kristy Brogan moved her to third
with a single, then the pitcher Laura Kate English singled Babcock home. Brogan moved to third on the single, and
later scored the second Kinght’s run of the inning on a wild pitch. This set the stage for the Hawks 6th
inning comeback.
Erin Waltersdorf pitched a complete
game for the win, and also went a perfect 3-3 at the plate and scored two runs
and had 2 RBI’s. Mandy McVerry had two
doubles, and drove in three runs. Stacy
Bean sparkled behind the plate, picking two Rockville runners off base.
The
Hawks fell behind in the second game as well, but scored 4 runs in the 5th
inning and another in the 6th to complete the sweep with a 7-3
victory. Rockville led 3-2 entering the
5th inning. Casey McClure
and Jennifer Brown walked to start the inning.
Erin Waltersdorf’s single loaded the bases, and Andrea Brady’s walk
forced home the first run. Two runs
scored on Stacy Bean’s single, and Mandy McVerry singled to knock in the final
run of the inning and give CSM a 6-3 lead.
CSM
added an insurance run in the 6th, when Jennifer Brown singled,
advanced to second on Erin Waltersdorf’s sacrifice bunt (her third of the
game), and scored on Andrea Brady’s single.
Rockville
again started the scoring with a run in the bottom of the 1st when
Erika Hock’s single scored Laura Kate English.
The Hawks answered right back in the top of the 2nd. Stacy Bean led off with a double, advanced
to third on a ground out, and scored on Kristin Tucker’s double.
Rockville
regained the lead in the bottom of the 2nd. Jessi Turner singled, then scored on a
throwing error by third baseman Erin Waltersdorf. The Hawks again tied the score in the top of the third. Jennifer Brown scored the second of her
three runs when she scored on Andrea Brady’s single. Brady had 3 RBI’s in the game.
Rockville
took their final lead of the afternoon when Joann Tedder scored on a wild pitch
in the bottom of the fourth.
The win improves the Hawks record to
20-12 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
The Knights drop to 8-16 overall, and 4-12 in conference play.
