SOFTBALL COMES FROM BEHIND TWICE TO SWEEP ROCKVILLE

By Rick Coffin

April 28 -  Down 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th inning, the Lady Hawks rallied for 4 runs for a come from behind victory over Rockville in the first game of a doubleheader at CSM.  Melissa Speake led things off for CSM with a walk.  Leah Gibson sacrificed her to second, she moved to third on Jennifer Brown’s groundout to second, and scored on Erin Waltersdorf’s single.  That tied the game at 3-3, but the Hawks weren’t finished yet.  Consecutive singles by Andrea Brady and Stacy Bean, and a double by Mandy McVerry scored 3 more runs, giving CSM their final margin of victory, 6-3.

Rockville scored first in the top of the 3rd, when Melanie Babcock walked, stole second, was sacrificed to 3rd, and scored on a wild pitch.  CSM answered back in the bottom of the third when Erin Waltersdorf led off the inning with a single and moved to second when the ball was misplayed by the left fielder.  She moved to third on an infield out, and scored on Mandy McVerry’s double, her first of two.

The Hawks took a brief led with a run in the 4th.  Leah Gibson walked, moved to second on an error by the pitcher that also allowed Jennifer Brown to reach base, and scored on Erin Waltersdorf’s RBI single.

The Knights grabbed the lead again with 2 runs in the top of the 5th.  With one out, Melanie Babcock singled, then stole her second base of the day.  Kristy Brogan moved her to third with a single, then the pitcher Laura Kate English singled Babcock home.  Brogan moved to third on the single, and later scored the second Kinght’s run of the inning on a wild pitch.  This set the stage for the Hawks 6th inning comeback.

Erin Waltersdorf pitched a complete game for the win, and also went a perfect 3-3 at the plate and scored two runs and had 2 RBI’s.  Mandy McVerry had two doubles, and drove in three runs.  Stacy Bean sparkled behind the plate, picking two Rockville runners off base.

The Hawks fell behind in the second game as well, but scored 4 runs in the 5th inning and another in the 6th to complete the sweep with a 7-3 victory.  Rockville led 3-2 entering the 5th inning.  Casey McClure and Jennifer Brown walked to start the inning.  Erin Waltersdorf’s single loaded the bases, and Andrea Brady’s walk forced home the first run.  Two runs scored on Stacy Bean’s single, and Mandy McVerry singled to knock in the final run of the inning and give CSM a 6-3 lead.

CSM added an insurance run in the 6th, when Jennifer Brown singled, advanced to second on Erin Waltersdorf’s sacrifice bunt (her third of the game), and scored on Andrea Brady’s single.

Rockville again started the scoring with a run in the bottom of the 1st when Erika Hock’s single scored Laura Kate English.  The Hawks answered right back in the top of the 2nd.  Stacy Bean led off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on Kristin Tucker’s double.

Rockville regained the lead in the bottom of the 2nd.  Jessi Turner singled, then scored on a throwing error by third baseman Erin Waltersdorf.  The Hawks again tied the score in the top of the third.  Jennifer Brown scored the second of her three runs when she scored on Andrea Brady’s single.  Brady had 3 RBI’s in the game.

Rockville took their final lead of the afternoon when Joann Tedder scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth.

The win improves the Hawks record to 20-12 overall and 9-5 in the conference.  The Knights drop to 8-16 overall, and 4-12 in conference play.
