COME FROM BEHIND WIN SPURS LADY HAWKS TO SWEEP OF FREDERICK

Sunday, April 14 -  After falling behind 1-0, the CSM softball team rallied to defeat Frederick 5-1 in the first game of a doubleheader.  The Hawks went on to win the second game by the identical score of 5-1, to sweep the doubleheader, and extend their win streak to 15.

Erin Waltersdorff pitched brilliantly in the first game, keeping the Hawks close after they fell behind 1-0.  She allowed just the one run, while scattering 5 hits and striking out 9, to gain her 21st win of the season.

Frederick scored their run in the top of the second, when Melissa Delsignore singled, was sacrificed to second by Laura Flook, and scored on Steph Federline's single.

Stacey Connley kept the Hawks in check until the 4th, when CSM rallied to tie the game.  Jennifer Brown led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Micki Johnson.  After Alison Middletown popped out to second, Amanda Kidwell hit a two out single, sending Brown home to tie the game.

CSM took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the 5th.  Megan Oursler led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Amanda Boswell.  Andrea Brady was safe on an error by the Cougar first baseman, and Stacy Bean singled to score Oursler to put the Hawks ahead 2-1, while sending Brady to second.

Nyeema Smalls then pitch ran for Brady, and scored on Micki Johnson's double.  With runners on second and third and two out, Allison Middleton came through with a single that scored two big insurance runs for the Hawks, and give CSM the 5-1 victory.

"We played well,"  said Head Coach Tom Morrison.  "We executed when we had to.  Amanda Kidwell and Stacy Bean's hits were huge!  Aaron Waltersdorff was excellent again."

Batting first in the second game, CSM jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Megan Oursler was hit by a pitch, stole second, was sacrificed to third by Amanda Boswell, and scored on Andrea Brady's sacrifice fly ball.

The Hawks added two more in the third, to increase the lead to 3-0.  Andrea Brady reached base on an error, and Jennifer Brown walked.  Micki Johnson drove both runners home when she doubled into right center.

Frederick cut the lead to 3-1 in the 4th.  Laura Flook reached base on an error,  moved to second on Botner's single, and scored on Muscal's single.  With the tying runs on base for Frederick, Anber Frantz sent a drive into the right centerfield gap that would have tied the game, but Melissa Speake ran a long way and made an outstanding catch to keep the Hawks in front.

CSM added another run in the 5th, when Stacy Bean tripled deep to left centerfield, then scored on Jennifer Brown's single.

The final Hawk run came in the top of the 7th.  Jennifer Brown singled and scored on Micki Johnson's RBI single.

Frederick put two runners on in the bottom of the 7th, but Waltersdorff snuffed the Cougar rally, helped by an excellent catch in leftfield by Amanda Kidwell.  The win improved Waltersdorff's record to 22-4 for the season.

CSM improves to 23-5, 11-1 while Frederick falls to 14-16 and 6-4 in the conference.

The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, when they host Prince George's in two crucial conference games.  Game time is 3:00 PM.
