LADY HAWKS SWEEP SKIPJACKS Saturday, April 27 - The CSM softball team swept a doubleheader from Chesapeake, 9-0 and 6-1. The Hawks, winners of 23 of their last 25 games improved to 29-6 overall, and 17-2 in MDJUCO play. Erin Waltersdorff was outstanding once again on the mound, going the distance in both games and improving her record to 28-5. She shut out Chesapeake in the first game, giving up only 2 hits while striking out 3. In the nightcap, Waltersdorff continued to dominate the Skipjacks, giving up only 1 unearned run, while striking out 6, and limiting Chesapeake to just 3 hits. The Hawks scored two in the bottom of the first to go ahead 2-0, Megan Oursler reached base when the centerfielder dropped her fly ball. Amanda Boswell sacrificed her to second, and Oursler advanced to third on a wild pitch. Stacy Bean walked and then stole second, putting runners on second and third with two outs. Jennifer Brown drew a walk to load the bases, and Allison Middleton came through with a single to score Oursler and Bean. CSM erupted for seven runs in the 4th to put the game away. The Hawks batted around, sending 9 hitters to the plate. CSM had 5 hits, and benefited from 2 Skipjack errors. Megan Oursler, Amanda Boswell, and Jennifer Brown all had RBI singles in the inning, and Erin Waltersdorf and Melissa Speake also singled and scored runs for CSM. The Hawks held Chesapeake in the top of the 5th to end the game with the 9-0 win. CSM again scored two in the 1st inning of the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Megan Oursler led off the inning with a bunt single, stole second, and advanced to third on Amanda Boswell's bunt single. Boswell stole second, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Oursler scored on a wild pitch moving Boswell to third. Boswell then scored on Andrea Brady's infield ground out. The Hawks added another run in the 4th to take a 3-0 lead. Jennifer Brown singled, stole second base, advanced to third on Allison Middleton's sacrifice, and scored on a passed ball. CSM threatened to add more, as Amanda Kidwell and Erin Waltersdorff reached on infield singles, but a sensational catch by shortstop Brittney Murphy on a line drive kept the Hawks from adding more. Chesapeake loaded the bases in the bottom of the 4th on singles by Michelle Davis, Michelle Beavers, and Cyndi Swann with only one out. Waltersdorff induced the next Skipjack to hit a ground ball right back to her. Waltersdorff threw home to cut the runner down at the plate, and catcher Stacy Bean's throw to first beat the runner to complete the 1-2-3 double play and end the Skipjack's threat. CSM added two more in the 5th. With one out, Andrea Brady singled, and came all the way home to score on Stacy Bean's double. Jennifer Brown singled to drive Bean home and give the Hawks a 5-0 lead. Chesapeake scored their only run of the game, without the benefit of a hit, in the bottom of the 5th. Susan LeCompte walked, was sacrificed to second, advanced to third when Katelyn Pyle reached on an error, and scored on a fielder's choice, to trim the lead to 5-1. Andrea Brady singled in the 7th, moved to second when Stacy Bean walked, and scored on Jennifer Brown's RBI single down the third base line for the final 6-1 margin. CSM will conclude the regular season tomorrow at home with a noon doubleheader against Navy. |
