7TH INNING RALLY SPURS LADY HAWKS TO SWEEP OF CATONSVILLE Wednesday, March 19 - For the second day in the row the CSM softball team trailed going into their last at bat in the bottom of the 7th inning, and for the second day in a row the Lady Hawks rallied to win in their final at bat. Trailing Catonsville 5-3 in the bottom of the 7th, Erica Bates led off for the Hawks and reached second on an error by the Catonsville left fielder. Annah Rice followed with double, cutting the lead to 5-4 and chasing starting pitcher Kristine Vlach. New pitcher Sarah Galloway proceeded to walk Jessica Cecil and Megan Oursler to load the bases with none out. After Amanda Boswell flied out to left for the first out, Heather Turner singled in the tying run. Melanie Fowler popped out to first for the second out. With extra innings looming, Chrissy Walden hit a line drive up the middle for the game winning run. The Hawks had battled back from a 5-0 deposit after 4 1/2 innings. After a pitching duel for the first four innings, Catonsville erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth. Sarah Galloway had a two run double for the Cardinals, and pitcher Kristine Vlach had an RBI single. Two more runs scored on an error and a wild pitch. CSM cut the margin to 5-2 with two runs in their half of the fifth. Karlee Adams reached second when the left fielder misplayed her fly ball and scored on Erica Bates' double. Bates advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on Jessica Cecil's ground out to second base. The Hawks scored their third run in the 6th on back to back doubles by Heather Turner and Melanie Fowler. Heather Turner (3-0) earned the win. Turner pitched out of several jams, stranding seven Cardinals on the bases. The Hawks jumped all over the stunned Cardinals in the second game winning 9-0 after five innings. CSM scored three runs in the top of the first, aided by two throwing errors by the Catonsville third baseman. Karlee Adams and Erica Bates also had RBI singles. CSM added a run in the second, and broke the game open in the fourth, scoring five more. Karlee Adams drove in two runs, and Megan Oursler and Heather Turner also had RBI singles. Megan Oursler drove in the final run with a single in the top of the fifth. Melanie Fowler picked up her fourth win against no losses. Her changeup kept the Catonsville hitters off balance all afternoon, and she had a perfect game going into the fourth before giving up the first of the three hits she allowed. Sarah Galloway took the loss for Catonsville. CSM improves to 8-2, 2-0 in MDJUCO play. Catonsville falls to 3-7, and 0-2. The Hawks will finish their home stand against Mohawk Valley tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM, and then travel to Delaware Tech - Stanton for a tournament this weekend. |
