LADY HAWKS COME FROM BEHIND TO SWEEP MOHAWK VALLEY Tuesday, March 18 - Trailing 5-4 going into the bottom of the 7th, the CSM softball team rallied for two runs to win 6-5 and sweep Mohawk Valley from New York. CSM won the opening game 11-3. Trailing 5-4 in their last at bat, Chrissy Walden led off the bottom of the 7th for the Lady Hawks with a single, and was sacrificed to 2nd by Karlee Adams. Erica Bates walked, putting runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Annah Rice grounded out to the pitcher, and the runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd, with two outs. Jessica Cecil lofted a fly ball to left field that the left fielder misplayed, allowing both Walden and Bates to score, and giving CSM a sweep of the doubleheader. CSM looked to be in control of the second game, jumping out to a 4-1 lead, after Mohawk Valley had taken a 1-0 lead in the first, for the second straight game. The Lady Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the 1st, the big hit a two run single by Karlee Adams. CSM added an unearned run in the 4th to take a 4-2 lead. Mohawk Valley scored an unearned run in the 4th to pull within one at 4-3, and then scored two in the top of the 6th to take the lead 5-4, setting the stage for the Hawks late rally. Heather Turner gave up four hits for CSM in the win, improving her record to 2-0. Linda Bloss (0-1) was the hard luck loser for Mohawk Valley. In the first game, CSM scored 11 runs on only one hit, as starting Mohawk Valley pitcher Krista Spooner's wildness hurt her. At one point she walked four batters in a row in the 3rd inning, as the Hawks scored four runs. The Mohawk Valley defense was shaky behind her as well, committing seven errors in the two games. Melanie Fowler had the lone hit for the Hawks in the first game, but it was a big one, as she crushed a double into the right center gap, driving in two runs and putting CSM ahead comfortably 8-1. Laura Fowler picked up the win for CSM, as she gave up only three hits while improving her record to 3-0. CSM improves to 6-2 on the year, while Mohawk Valley falls to 0-2. The Lady Hawks continue their home stand with a big conference doubleheader tomorrow against Catonsville, beginning at 3:00 PM.
