LADY HAWKS SPLIT WITH ANNE ARUNDEL - REMAIN TIED FOR FIRST Saturday, April 24 - The CSM softball team entered the afternoon tied with Anne Arundel for first place in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference, and left the afternoon still tied for first, as the teams split a key conference doubleheader. The Pioneers won the first game 8-5, and the Hawks came back to win the nightcap 11-2. Errors proved to be the downfall of the Hawks in the first game, as they committed three in the 2nd inning, allowing Anne Arundel to score 8 unearned runs. The big hits in the inning came from Denise Schultheis who had a single and a triple and drove in two runs, Stephanie Stoll had two hits and an RBI, and Jess Griffith doubled to drive in two runs in the inning. The Hawks battled back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 4th to cut the margin to 8-2. Danielle Sturman was safe when the second baseman dropped her popup. Erica Bates followed with a single, sending Sturman to third, and Jessica Donaldson plated both runners with a double. CSM got another run in the 5th, when Jamea Waltersdorff led off with a triple, and scored on Karlee Adams ground out. The Hawks closed the margin to 8-5 with two more in the bottom of the 6th. Erica Bates walked, and moved to third on Jessica Donaldson's double. Annah Rice doubled to drive home one run, with Donaldson stopping at third, and Jamie Buckler singled to drive home the Hawks second run of the inning. In the bottom of the 7th, Heather Turner singled to lead off, but was erased on Lindsay Boswell's fielder's choice. Erica Bates followed with a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate, but the Hawks were unable to push across any more runs. Heather Turner (16-5) took the loss. Erica Bates pitched five shut-out innings in relief for CSM. Kristi Forrester got the win for Anne Arundel, improving to 10-0 on the year. In the second game, CSM (27-6, 14-2) got all the runs they would need when they erupted for seven runs in the top of the first to jump in front 7-0. Jamea Waltersdorff led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Karlee Adams. Heather Turner walked, and Danielle Sturman singled, driving in the first run. Both Turner and Sturman advanced to second and third on the throw to the plate. Erica Bates was safe on a short single, with the runners holding at second and third. Jessica Donaldson plated Sturman with a sacrifice fly to right for the second out of the inning. Annah Rice followed with a single to drive in two more runs to give CSM a 4-0 lead. After a Lindsay Boswell single, Jamie Buclker singled driving in another run, and Jamea Waltersdorf got her second hit of the inning when she singled to drive in the final two runs of the inning and put CSM up 7-0. The Hawks added one more run in the top of the sixth when Lindsay Boswell was hit by a pitch, was sacrificed to second by Jamie Buckler, and came home to score on Karlee Adam's triple. Anne Arundel (17-5, 12-2) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, to cut the Hawk lead to 8-2. With one out, Fallyn Reeves singled, and advanced to second when the ball got away from the centerfielder. After a popup for the second out, Kara Zoolakis singled to drive home Reeves, and advanced to second on the throw home. Holly Stratton doubled to drive in the second run, but was thrown out at third by Hawk catcher Karlee Adams as she tried to advance on the throw to the plate. CSM added three more in the top of the seventh for the final 11-3 margin. Danielle Sturman doubled to lead off, and scored on Jessica Donaldson's single. Annah Rice tripled to plate Donaldson, and scored on Lindsay Boswell's single. The Hawks will travel to Allegany tomorrow for a 1:00 doubleheader, and will play their final home games of the season when they host Prince George's on Friday, April 30 in a 3:00 PM doubleheader. |
