LADY HAWKS SWEEP FREDERICK FOR 18th STRAIGHT WIN Wednesday, April 7 - The CSM softball team swept Frederick 4-0, 10-2 in a doubleheader to open the season 18-0, 8-0 in MDJUCO, the best start in the school's history. Pitching dominated in the first game, as Heather Turner pitched her 4th straight shut-out in leading the Hawks to a 4-0 win. Turner only allowed one hit and struck out eight in improving her record to 9-0 on the year. CSM got two runs in the bottom of the first to jump in front 2-0. Jamea Waltersdorff doubled to lead off the home half of the first, and Karlee Adams singled to drive her home. Heather Turner was safe on a fielder's choice when Adams was forced out at second. Turner moved to second on a fielder's choice, and scored on Erica Bates RBI single. The Hawks added two more in the 4th. Jamie Buckler was safe on an error by the Cougars third baseman, stole second, and moved to 3rd on a wild pitch. Jessica Cecil was safe on an infield single, but Buckler had to hold at third, putting runners on the corners. Jamea Waltersdorf singled to drive in Buckler, and Cecil scored on an error by the first baseman. Jamea Waltersdorf was 2-3 with a double and RBI, Karlee Adams and Jessica Donaldson were both 2-3 with RBI's to lead the Hawks in the opening game. The second game was all about offense, as CSM scored three runs in the second, third, and sixth innings, with a single run sandwiched in the 5th, to run rule Frederick (4-10, 1-7) after six innings. CSM scored their three runs in the 2nd without the benefit of a hit, aided by two Frederick errors. Erica Bates reached when the Frederick shortstop misjudged her pop-up to short leftfield, and Annah Rice walked putting runners on first and second with no outs. Lindsay Boswell reached on a fielder's choice, when the Cougars unsuccessfully tried to cut down Bates at third on an infield ground ball, loading the bases. Cheyann Gilroy grounded out driving in one run, and another scored on an error by the Cougar first baseman. Karlee Adams fly ball to deep center drove in the third run of the inning. It looked like the Hawks would score more, but Kelly Bice made an outstanding catch on Heather Turner's drive to deep right center, robbing her of an extra base hit. CSM picked right back up where they left off in the 3rd, scoring three more to take a 6-0 lead. Erica Bates and Lindsay Boswell singled to drive in two of the runs, and Jamea Waltersdorff's fielder's choice scored the third. Erica Bates scored the Hawks run in the 5th, reaching on a two base error by Bice in centerfield, moving to third on a fielder's choice, and scoring on a passed ball. Trailing 7-0, the Cougars scored two in the bottom of the 5th to cut the CSM lead to 7-2. Frederick had two hits in the inning and benefited from two walks. Emily Warremfeltz drove in one Cougar run on a fielder's choice, and Shannon Sturtz's RBI single plated the other. CSM scored three in the top of the 6th with two outs for the final scoring. Danielle Sturman doubled, and moved to third on Jessica Donaldson's single. Erica Bates drove in one run on a single, putting runners on the corner. Annah Rice cleared the bases with a mammoth triple well over the left fielder's head. Erica Bates went the distance to win her eighth game of the year with no defeats. While she struggled with her control, walking five, hitting a batter, and allowing three hits, she was able to pitch out most jams, stranding five Frederick runners. She was helped out by a nifty double play in the first, when second baseman Annah Rice scooped up a ground ball, flipped over to Jamea Waltersdorff covering second, and Waltersdorff fired to first baseman Danielle Sturman to complete the twin killing and end the inning. The Hawks return to action tomorrow, when they host Potomac State in a 2:00 PM doubleheader.
