LADY HAWKS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH HAGERSTOWN Sunday, April 10, 2005 - On a beautiful spring day with the temperature in the mid 70's, the largest crowd of the year saw the CSM softball team split a doubleheader with Hagerstown, winning the first game 1-0, and losing the nightcap 6-0. Ashley Cook's single in the third inning was the difference in the first game, as she drove in Jessica Perry with the winning run. Perry pitched out of several jams to earn the win, with Jessica Balta relieving in the 7th inning to earn a save. In the second game, Hagerstown pounded out 10 hits on the way to a 6-0 win. 1st Game The Hawks pushed across the only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Jessica Perry led off with a single to left, and moved to second on Somer Miller's sacrifice. Jamie Buckler singled, and moved to second on an errant throw home by the center fielder. Perry had to hold at third, putting runners at second and third with one out. After Jessica Balta struck out for the second out, Ashley Cook delivered a clutch single driving in Perry with the only run of the game. Jessica Perry (2-2) picked up the win, pitching out of several jams to keep Hagerstown scoreless. Hagerstown loaded the bases in the top of the second with only one out, but Perry was able to induce a fly to short left field, and a ground out to second base to escape with no damage. Hagerstown threatened again in the third, putting runners on first and second with just one out. Again Jessica Perry bore down, getting a fielder's choice force out at third base, and inducing a ground ball to herself, ending the threat. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Perry's control deserted her as she walked two batters with two outs. With a two ball count on the next batter, Head Coach Tom Morrison elected to bring in Jessica Balta. Behind in the count 2-0, Balta battled back to 3-2, before getting the batter to pop out to second base, earning her first save of the year. Together Perry and Balta were able to strand nine Hagerstown runners on base.
2nd Game In the second game, Hagerstown (6-6, 1-5) jumped in front early, with three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Dee Brown doubled with one out, and scored on Jess Stough's single. Stough moved to second on the throw home. Cherras Freeman drove her home with a single, and also moved to second on the throw home. Freeman advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on Amy Miller's single, giving Hagerstown a 3-0 lead. Hagerstown also added single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth for the final 6-0 margin. CSM (3-5, 3-3) had their best scoring chance in the top of the sixth. Melissa Boswell singled to lead off the inning, and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Tina Dittami singled, but pinch runner Kimmie Patton had to hold at second, as it appeared centerfielder Dee Brown had a chance to catch the ball. That put runners at first and second with just one out. But Hagerstown pitcher Casey Woods (6-4), who also pitched the first game, bore down, striking out the next two Hawks to end the threat. Jessica Balta (1-3) took the loss for the Hawks. CSM hits the road next week, with doubleheaders at Cecil on Wednesday, and Prince George's on Saturday. |
