ANNE ARUNDEL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER FROM LADY
HAWKS
March 29, 2006 -
In two very close softball games, Anne
Arundel swept a doubleheader from CSM, winning 3-1 and 3-2. The first
game was a pitching duel. Hawk errors in the field helped Anne Arundel
score three unearned runs, which proved to be the difference. While
CSM only managed two hits in the first game, the Hawks out hit the Pioneers
eight to five in the night cap, but lost in eight innings as Anne Arundel
came from behind after CSM took an early 2-0 lead.
Anne Arundel pitcher Kristie Hurman was dominate in the first game, limiting
CSM to just two hits, while striking out 10. A Hawk error in the field
led to two runs for Anne Arundel in the fourth inning. With two
runners on and no outs, the Hawk third baseman was unable to come up with a
ground ball, scoring one run. Later in the inning Kristie Hurman
helped her cause with a sacrifice fly on what should have been the third out
of the inning, giving Anne Arundel a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers scored another unearned run in the fifth inning, as Shannon
Conwell scored on another Hawk miscue in the field.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, CSM mounted a comeback.
Danielle Sturman walked, and was replaced by pinch runner Virginia Smith.
With one out, Ashley Cook doubled, scoring Smith, and cutting the lead to
3-1. Cook moved to third on a fielder's choice, but CSM wasn't able to
push across anymore runs, and fell 3-1.
Kristie Hurman earned the win for Anne Arundel, and Amanda Johnston was the
hard luck loser. Johnston stuck out seven, gave up five hits, and no
earned runs.
After only managing two hits in the first game, the Hawks bats came alive in
the second game. In the top of the second, Ashley Cook walked, and
moved to second on Stephanie Young's single, putting runners on first and
second with one out. Katrina Garner walked to load the bases with two
outs, and Betty Tennison drove in two runs with a two out single, giving CSM
a 2-0 lead.
Hawk pitcher Amanda Johnston had a perfect game for three innings, until
Shannon Conwell looped a ball just past third base in the fourth inning for
the first Pioneer hit of the game. She was sacrificed to second, but
was stranded there as Johnston bore down and retired the next two batters.
Anne Arundel (15-4, 7-1) came back to tie the game in the fifth inning.
With one out, Kristie Harman doubled, and moved to third on Gianna Graham's
single. Graham stole second, putting runners on second and third with
just one out. Johnston got Jenna Haney to pop out, but Kristine
Kerdock walked, loading the bases. Shannon Conwell singled home two
runs to tie the score at 2-2. Johnston then got Amber Stapler to fly
to center ending the threat.
The score remained tied, forcing extra innings. With the Hawks batting
in the top of the eight, Autumn Boyd started the inning at second base.
A fielder's choice moved her to third with one out, but the Hawks weren't
able to get the run home, as the next two batters were retired.
In the bottom of the eight, leadoff hitter Shannon Conwell started at second
base for Anne Arundel. A wild pitch moved her to third, and she scored
on Amber Stapler's single, giving CSM (11-8, 3-3) a heartbreaking 3-2 loss.
The Hawks will participate in the Hagerstown Tournament this weekend, and
then play eight games on the road before returning home to host Dundalk, on
April 15 at 12:00 noon.
