PITT WINS 11TH CSM INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT
March 14, 2006 -
Pitt Community College (NC), recovered from
an early loss in bracket play to win the 2006 CSM Invitational Softball
Tournament. The Bulldogs held off a determined Camden team to win the
championship game 6-3. Pitt led 6-1 going into the bottom of the
seventh, but Camden scored two runs to cut the margin to 6-3, and had two
runners on base, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs. However
Pitt was able to get the final out and claim the championship.
The College of Southern Maryland finished 2-1 in bracket play, losing their
opening game to Herkimer 4-2, but bouncing back to defeat Rockville 9-3, and
Cecil 9-7. The Hawks finished in a three way tie for first in their
division, but were seeded third due to tie breakers.
In the first round of single elimination play on Sunday, the Hawks fell to
Chesapeake 8-3. The Hawks Amanda Johnston had a terrific weekend at
the plate, and was named to the All Tournament team.
It was a beautiful weekend, with temperatures in the mid 70's both days, and
record crowds turned out to watch a very competitive tournament. Two
games went into extra innings, and nine other games were decided by two runs
or less.
