LADY HAWKS SWEEP DUNDALK FOR FIFTH WIN IN A ROW

April 15, 2006 - The CSM (18-13, 8-6) softball team won their fifth game in a row in a doubleheader sweep over Dundalk (6-14).  Amanda Johnston was dominate on the mound, winning a pitcher's duel in the first game and allowing only one hit in the Hawks 2-0 win.  Johnston was equally dominate in the second game, only allowing two hits in shutting out Dundalk again 12-0.  The Hawks gave her more run support in the second game, as Stephanie Young drove in three runs, Autumn Boyd and Johnston had two RBI's, and Danielle Sturman and Kimmie Patton added 1 RBI each.

In the first game, the Hawks margin of victory could have been larger, but CSM stranded nine runners during the contest.  The Hawks had runners on base in every inning but the first, but Dundalk pitcher Keri Essel was able to get out of each inning with a minimum of damage.

CSM got their first run in the third, when Betty Tennison doubled with one out.  Autumn Boyd followed and ripped a 3-2 pitch for a double, scoring Tennison.  Danielle Sturman followed with a single, sending Boyd to third, but the Hawks were unable to do any more damage, as Lion pitcher Essel was able to retire the next two batters.

The Hawks looked to add to their lead in the fourth, as Stephanie Young led off with a single, and Dawn Leigh attempted a sacrifice and reached first when Dundalk tried to get Young at second.  Both runners advanced on a passed ball, putting runners at second and third with no outs, but again Essel was able to pitch her way out of trouble, retiring the next three batters.

CSM got an insurance run in the firth.  Autumn Boyd and Danielle Sturman led off the inning with back to back singles, and Amanda Johnston's sacrifice moved them to second and third with one out.  Essel retired the next  hitter, and looked like she might get out of yet another jam, but then walked Stephanie Young.  Dawn Leigh was hit by a pitch, forcing Boyd home giving CSM the 2-0 lead, which turned out to be the final score.

Amanda Johnston kept the Lions at bay, allowing only one hit, walking one batter, and hitting two.  Two of the runners were erased when Stephanie Young gunned them down attempting to steal.

In the second game, the Hawks batted first and jumped in front early, scoring four runs in the top of the first.  With one out, Autum Boyd singled, and moved to second when left fielder Betty Luedtke dropped Danielle Sturman's fly ball.  Amanda Johnston walked, loading the bases with one out.  Ashley Cook singled home one run, and Sturman scored when the Dundalk left fielder misplayed the ball again.  Stehpanie Young tripled to drive in two more runs, putting CSM up 4-0.

The Hawks added two more in the second with a two out rally.  Autumn Boyd was the catalyst once again, as she walked, and moved to second on Danielle Sturman's single.  Amanda Johnston singled, driving in Boyd, and moving Sturman to second.  Sturman scored when the Dundalk left fielder dropped another fly ball, giving the Hawks a 6-0 lead.

CSM scored three more in the third, to take a 9-0 lead.  Three consecutive walks loaded the bases with no outs, and Autumn Boyd singled threw a drawn in infield to drive in two runs.  The third run scored on a wild pitch.

The Hawks finished off the scoring in the fifth.  Betty Tennison singled, and Autumn Boyd followed with another single.  Danielle Sturman reached on yet another error by the Lion left fielder, loading the bases.  Amanda Johnston singled home one run, and Kimmie Patton was hit by a pitch to drive in the second run of the inning.  Stephanie Young drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly to center.

Amanda Johnston had another strong game, only allowing two hits, both in the first inning.  She walked three, hit one batter, and struck out five.

The Hawks next game will be Monday, when they host Allegany in a 2:00 PM doubleheader in a key MDJUCO matchup.
