LADY HAWKS SWEEP RAPPHANNOCK
March 27, 2006 -
The CSM softball team swept Rapphannock, 10-5
and 14-0, for their fifth win in a row, to improve their record to 11-6, and
3-1 in MDJUCO.
In the first game, CSM scored three runs without getting a hit in the bottom
of the second to jump in front 3-0. Leading off the inning, Amanda
Johnston reached second base when the left fielder lost the ball in the sun,
advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Ashley Cook's sacrifice fly
to left. With one out, Dawn Leigh walked, and Katrina Gardner
sacrificed her to second. Leigh advanced to third on a passed ball,
and scored when the third baseman misplayed Amanda Bell's ground ball, on
what should have been the third out of the inning. Bell stole second,
and Mandy Martin walked, putting runners on first and second with two down.
Betty Tennison hit a slow ground ball to short, and instead of throwing to
first, Rapphannock's Stacy Hall tried to get the force at third, but Amanda
Bell beat the throw, to load the bases. Another wild pitch by Gull
pitcher Megan McDonald plated Bell to put CSM up 3-0.
Rapphannock scored four times in the top of the third to take the lead.
Megan Patterson and Stacy Hall singled to lead off the inning for the Gulls,
and both runners scored on Kathryn Brann's double. The next batter,
Sam Jones was hit by the pitch, putting runners on the corners with no outs.
With one out, Whitney Kinsey reached on an error, loading the bases.
Sally Parr's sacrifice fly plated one run, and Megan McDonald singled home
the fourth run of the inning, giving the Gulls a 4-3 lead.
CSM recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fourth, with a two out rally.
After the first two Hawk batters were retired, Mandy Martin walked, and
scored on Betty Tennison's double. Tennison advanced to third on the
play at the plate, and scored on a wild pitch, giving CSM a 5-4 lead.
The Hawks added an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th. Danielle
Sturman singled to lead off the inning, and Virginia Smith went in to pinch
run. Amanda Johnston sacrificed Smith to second, and a wild pitch sent
Smith to third. Ashley Cook's double scored Smith, to give the Hawks a
6-4 lead.
In the top of the 6th, Rapphannock loaded the bases with one out, but Amanda
Johnston was able to close the door without giving up a run, getting the
next two Gull hitters to ground out.
The Hawks added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. With
the bases loaded, Autumn Boyd's single drove in two runs. Amanda
Johnston's single plated Boyd, who had moved to second on a fielder's
choice, and Johnston scored when Stephanie Young walked with the bases
loaded, giving CSM a 10-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh Rapphannock scored their final run when Sally Parr
doubled and Maria Passagaluppi tripled to drive Parr home for the final 10-5
margin.
An eight run inning in the bottom of the 1st helped the Hawks take control
of the second game early. Betty Tennison led off the inning with a
walk, Autumn Boyd beat out an infield single, and Danielle Sturman was hit
by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Amanda Johnston walked
forcing in the first run, and Ashley Cook followed with a two run single,
giving CSM a 3-0 lead. Dawn Leigh walked, loading the bases again,
still with no outs. Virginia Smith followed with another walk, to put
CSM up 4-0. Stephanie Young singled in the fifth Hawks run. With
one out, Betty Tennison's sacrifice fly plated the sixth Hawk run, and
Autumn Boyd's two run single finished off the scoring for CSM. In the
inning, the Hawks sent 13 batters to the plate, had five hits, received four
walks along with a hit batter, and left two runners on base as they jumped
in front 8-0.
CSM scored four more runs in the bottom of the third. Autumn Boyd had
the big hit, as she doubled with the bases loaded, driving in three runs.
Boyd moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Amanda Johnson's infield
sacrifice, putting the Hawks up 12-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Stephanie Young blasted a double to the fence,
driving in Virginia Smith who had singled, putting CSM up 13-0. Young
moved to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on Betty Tennison's single.
CSM will host Anne Arundel on Wednesday at 2:00 PM, in a key MDJUCO
