HAPPY HOMECOMING AS VOLLEYBALL ROUTS
ALLEGANY
October 8, 2005 -
Although the day was gray and rainy, causing
the men and women's soccer games to be postponed, the CSM volleyball team
was on top of their game, sweeping Allegany 30-15, 30-22, and 30-16 to
ensure the Harvest Homecoming crowd left happy.
CSM (15-13, 6-1) was on top of their game early, as they jumped out to a 8-0
lead in the first game. After gaining side out, Jamea Waltersdorff had
four service aces, and Kimmie Patton and Katie Tyner each had a kill to lead
the Hawks.
After Allegany gained side out, the Hawks ran off four more points to take
control of the game at 12-1. CSM never let the Trojans get closer then
six points, as they easily captured the first game 30-15. Janea Burt
had four kills, Jamea Waltersdorff two kills, and Virginia Smith and Becky
Peters both had service aces to pace the Hawks.
The second game wasn't as easy, as Allegany (4-16), jumped in front early,
holding a two point lead at 6-4. The Trojans extended their lead to
five points at 13-8, as Jessica Burkett and Casey Wilson had two blocks at
the net for points.
CSM battled back, and after gaining side out, ran off six points in a row to
take a 15-13 lead on Jamea Waltersdorff's serve. Waltersdorff had an
ace and Katie Tyner a kill to pace the Hawks.
The Trojans wouldn't go away, and tied the game at 15-15 on Tonya Combs
block. However CSM slowly pulled away, outscoring Allegany 15-7 the
rest of the game to win 30-22. Vanessa Thompson led the charge with
two service aces, as the Hawks scored six points on her serve. Katie
Tyner and Janea Burt both had kills during the run. Later in the game
Burt had another kill along with Rachel Olup, and Janea Burt rapped up the
game with an ace.
The early part of the third game was close, with CSM clinging to a 6-5 lead
after Casey Wilson had a kill for the Trojans. That was a close as
Allegany would get the rest of the night, as the Hawks went on a 18-7 run to
put the game out of reach. Katie Tyner had an ace, Vanessa Thompson
and Rachel Olup each had a kill, and Olup also had a dink into an open spot
for another Hawk point. Rachel Olup put the finishing touch on the
match, serving an ace to give the Hawks the third game 30-16.
The Hawks will host Baltimore in their next game on Tuesday (6:00 PM).
