VOLLEYBALL RALLIES PAST CATONSVILLE IN KEY MDJUCO GAME

September 13, 2005 - In a key MDJUCO volleyball match, the CSM volleyball team defeated perennial power Catonsville 30-23, 28-30, 30-26, 30-21.

In the first game, both sides seemed tight, as both teams committed numerous unforced errors in this important early season match.  The Hawks fell behind early 10-6, with four of their points coming on Catonsville service errors.  Jamea Waltersdorff's kill cut the Cardinal lead to 10-7, and ignited a run that saw CSM take the lead 14-13 on Waltersdorff and Janea Burt's block.

The game remained tight, as the Hawks weren't able to pull away, and Catonsville came back to tie the game twice.  With CSM clinging to a 21-19 lead, the Hawks went on a run, outscoring Catonsville 9-4 the rest of the way to take the first game 30-23.  Janea Burt, Jamea Waltersdorff, and Katie Tyner all had key blocks during the run, and Tyner added a service ace as well.  With the score 27-21, Kimmie Patton blocked three consecutive spike attempts to put the Hawks up 28-21.  Patton came right back on the next play to block another Catonsville shot to give CSM a commanding 29-23 lead.

The second game was tight as well, and although play picked up some, both sides continued to have numerous unforced errors.  CSM (11-8, 2-0) edged out to a 21-16 lead after a Catonsville error after a great rally.  However the Cardinals slowly worked their way back into the game, tying the score at 24-24 on a CSM mis-hit.

Back to back net violations by both sides netted the score again at 25, and Katie Tyner's kill tied the game again at 26.  Catonsville's Michelle Davis drooped a shot in to put the Cardinals ahead 29-26.  Jamea Waltersdorff ralled the Hawks with back to back kills to cut the lead to one at 29-28, before a service error gave Catonsville the win at 30-28.  Lauren Carver and Connie Pikounis led the Cardinals with several kills and blocks during the game.

In the third game CSM went on a 6-2 run to turn a 12-10 lead into a 18-12 advantage.  Jamea Waltersdorff had two kills in the run as well as a service ace.

Catonsville (1-1) rallied back, as back to back aces by Connie Pikounis pulled the Cardinals to within one at 22-21.  However the Hawks were able to stem the tide, as Katie Tyner had a kill and dropped another ball in for a point, as the Hawks took the third game 30-26 for a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the final game, the score was tied at 18-18, when the Hawks went on a 12-3 run to put the game away and take the game 30-21, and the match 3 games to 1.  Vanessa Thompson had some key kills in the final game, and Katie Tyner had two big kills and found an open spot with another hit.  Becky Peters had a key backhand smash for a point, and Virginia Smith made a diving save of a Catonsville spike that found an open spot for a key Hawk point.  Janea Burt made an incredible point, when she went way above the net to out jump two Catonsville players for a key block for a point down the stretch.

The Hawks will travel to Hagerstown Friday for another key MDJUCO game.  After a long road trip, the Hawks return home on October 4 to take on conference foe Essex at 6:00 PM.
