LADY HAWKS WIN HARD FOUGHT MATCH FROM CECIL
September 7, 2005 - After dropping
the first game, the CSM volleyball team battled back to win the next three
games and gain a hard earned win over Cecil. The Hawks improve to 7-6
and 1-0 in MDJUCO play.
After dropping
the first game 29-31, and narrowly winning the second game 30-27, CSM hit
their stride in the third and fourth games, winning 30-17 and 30-20.
Jamea Waltersdorff and Janae Burt were the big offensive weapons for the
Hawks, getting multiple kills off sets from Becky Peters. Waltersdorff
and Burt, along with Kimmie Patton also had some big plays on the net,
getting some crucial blocks during the match.
Neither team
could pull away in the first match, with neither team enjoying more then a
two point lead during the entire game. With the score tied at 29-29,
the Seahawks were able to claim the next two points, and take a 1-0 lead in
the match.
The Hawks
came out on fire in the second match, jumping out to a 12-4 lead.
Katie Tyner had two kills, and Janae Burt had a kill and a block during the
run.
However the
Seahawks wouldn't go away, and Megan Worthington's ace tied the game at
16-16. Cecil took the lead 17-16 on Aubry Graffunder's kill. The
game remained tight throughout. After CSM got side out ahead 28-27,
Jamea Waltersdorff had back to back kills to give the Hawks a 30-27 victory.
The third game
was knotted at 11-11, when the Hawks went on a 11-3 run to break it open.
Again Waltersdorff was a key player, with a kill and an ace. She also
combined with Kimmie Patton for a big block for a point during the run.
In the
final game, CSM slowly pulled away, with a couple mini-spurts. The
Hawks scored four points on Becky Peter's serve, and five more on Stephanie
Fowler's serve to surge ahead 23-14, and never looked back. Janae Burt
and Katie Tyner had several kills and Tyner had two key aces, Megan Starr
had two aces, and Becky Peters had an ace to pace the Hawks.
CSM will
travel to Pittsburgh this weekend to play in the Butler Tournament, and will
return home Tuesday, September 13 to host Catonsville (6:00 PM), in a key
MDJUCO match-up.
