LADY HAWKS PERFECT IN SWEEP OF ESSEX

October 4, 2005 - The CSM volleyball team swept their second opponent in a row, defeating Essex 30-13, 30-25, and 30-19 to win the match three games to none.

Janea Burt paced the Hawks early in the first game, as she had three blocks (one with Vanessa Thompson), and two kills to account for five of the Hawks first eight points.  The game was close early.  Jamea Waltersdorff's kill gave CSM a 12-9 lead, and the Hawks went on a 18-4 run to win the first game 30-13.  CSM reeled off eight points in a row on Virginia Smith's serve to go up 26-12, and put the game out of reach of the Knights.  Janea Burt had a block and kill during the run, Jamea Waltersdorr had a kill, and Vanessa Thompson an ace to aid the Hawk cause.

The second game wasn't as easy, as Essex (7-8, 2-4) hung close to the Hawks the entire game.  The Hawks went on a mini-run early in the game to stretch a 11-8 lead to 15-9.  Becky Peters had a block for a point, and Vanessa Thompson had a kill, and the Knights committed a several hitting errors during the spurt.

Essex wouldn't go away, and pulled within two at 16-14 after scoring a point after a long rally.  CSM (14-13, 5-1) again stretched the lead to 23-15, only to see Essex storm back to within three at 27-24 after a Katy Dobson ace, and Alison Withers block.  A couple Essex errors put the Hawks in control at 29-24, and Vanessa Thompson's kill iced the game for the Hawks at 30-25.

The Hawks jumped in front early in the final game, taking an early 13-4 advantage.  Several Hawks contributed to the lead, as Janea Burt had an ace and block, Katie Tyer a kill, Vanessa Thompson had back to back kills, Kimmie Patton had a block, and Virginia Smith served an ace.

This time, when the Knights tried to come back, CSM went on another run, outscoring Essex 11-4 to turn a tight 14-9 game into a comfortable 25-10 lead.  Again several Hawks contributed to the run, as Kimmie Patton, Janea Burt and Rachel Olup each had kill, and Virginia Smith served another ace.  On one memorable point, Jamea Waltersdorff had back to back digs and Janea Burt finished off the point with a kill to put CSM up 18-10 at the time.  The Hawks would go on to win 30-19.

The Hawks next game will be Saturday, when they face Allegany at 12:00 PM on Harvest Homecoming.
