VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS HOWARD TO CLINCH 2ND PLACE
October 20, 2005 -
The CSM volleyball team saved their best
match for their final home game, as they swept a strong Howard team 30-16,
30-21, 30-23 to clinch second place in MDJUCO. On Sophomore Night, it
was two sophomores playing their final home game in the "Hawks Nest", and
two freshmen who led the team. Sophomore Jamea Waltersdorff had a
monster game, finishing with 10 kills. Jamea also had a block and an
ace. Sophomore Katie Tyner had six kills, a block and an ace.
Two freshmen also shined for the Hawks, as Janea Burt had six kills (five in
the final game), three blocks, and an ace, and Vanessa Thompson had four
kills, a block and an ace. Sophomore Kimmie Patton also contributed
three kills and a block, two of the kills down the stretch in the crucial
final game. Freshman Becky Peters made the accurate sets, freshman
Virginia Smith anchored the back line as the Libro, and also made some key
serves. The Hawks were tenacious on defense all night, setting up
blocks at the net and diving all over the court to keep the ball in play and
keep Howard from getting any easy points. A boisterous crowd of over
250 helped spur the Hawks on.
Alana Eller led Howard (25-10, 8-2) with six kills and an ace, while Faith
Happel had three kills, two blocks and an ace, and Amanda Rouvillard had
three kills.
CSM (21-16, 9-1) came out on fire in the first game, jumping out to a 9-2
lead, and never looked back on the way to a 30-16 win. Katie Tyner had
two kills during the early run, Vanessa Thompson had one, and Virginia Smith
served an ace. Ahead 13-6, CSM went on a 10-3 run to put the game out
of reach of the Dragons. Vanessa Thompson had two kills during the
run, and Janea Burt had a kill and a block for the Hawks.
The second game was tight early. With the Hawks ahead 8-7, CSM outscored
Howard 8-1 to distance themselves from the Dragons on the way to a 30-21
win. Jamea Waltersdorff led CSM during the spurt, with three
consecutive kills. Katie Tyner also had a kill during the run.
Howard showed why they are one of the top teams in MDJUCO, as they refused
to fold in the third game, and jumped in front early, taking a 4-1 lead.
The Hawks battled back to tie the game at 7-7, and took their first lead 8-7
on Janea Burt's kill.
A seven point run turned a 15-14 Hawk lead into a 22-14 advantage.
However the Dragons weren't done, as they climbed back into the game, and
Alanea Eller's ace cut the Hawk lead to 24-21. CSM regained their
momentum, and closed out the game with a 6-2 run, to take the final game
30-23. Kimmie Patton had kill followed by a block, Vanessa Thompson
had a kill, and Jamea Waltersdorff tipped the ball to an open spot for a
point during the run.
The Hawks will travel to Rhode Island this weekend for tournament play,
before competing in the Region XX Tournament at Catonsville Oct. 29 and 30.
