VOLLEYBALL FINISHES 2ND IN REGION XX
TOURNAMENT
November 3, 2005 -
The CSM volleyball team fell to 17th ranked
Hagerstown in the Region XX Championship game 23-30, 24-30, 21-30, to finish
second in the Region. The Hawks also finished in second place in
MDJUCO.
The Hawks breezed through the first round of tournament play, sweeping Essex
(30-21, 30-17), Cecil (30-21, 32-30), and Catonsville (30-25, 30-22).
However, the wins were tempered by the loss of Middle Blocker Janea Burt,
who twisted her ankle during first round play. Burt was sixth in the
country in blocks (1.89 per game), and second on the team in kills (2.65 per
game).
Even without Burt in the line-up, CSM looked impressive in the semi-finals,
easily defeating Frederick 30-15, 30-9, and 30-15.
In the championship game, the Hawks jumped out front early, taking a 19-13
lead. However, Hagerstown went on a 12-0 run, taking a 25-19 lead, and
went on to win the first game 30-23. CSM played hard in the final two
games, but Hagerstown was able to complete the sweep 3-0, and advance to the
National Tournament.
The Hawks finished the season with a 27-19 record. Head Coach Michelle Ruble
was proud of the team's effort this year:
"This year we had an extraordinary group of young women that committed to
CSM's volleyball program and each other. They were a pleasure to coach
and to travel with, (we traveled a lot). Ron (Swann), Pat (Brewer),
and I are very proud of their accomplishments (2nd in the conference and 2nd
in the region) and already miss them."
Several Hawks received post season honors. Jamea Waltersdorff, Becky
Peters, and Katie Tyner were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Jamea Waltersdorff and Katie Tyner were also named 1st Team All Region XX
for their play during the regular season. Becky Peters and Janea Burt
were Honorable Mention All Region XX.
