VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS GARRETT IN SEASON OPENER

September 5, 2006 - The CSM volleyball team swept Garrett 30-21, 30-19, and 30-21 in the MDJUCO opener for both teams.

In the first game it looked like CSM (7-5, 1-0) would have no problem with Garrett (0-3, 0-1), as the Hawks raced out to a 7-0 lead.  Virginia Smith had an ace and Ally Rose had a kill during the run.

However the Lakers battled back, helped partly by some sloppy play from the Hawks.  Garrett cut the Hawks lead to one point, 9-8, after CSM hit the ball long on a spike attempt.

"I was not impressed with our front line play" said Head Coach Michelle Ruble, "We made too many errors."

With the Hawks still clinging to a one point lead, 20-19, Garrett was called for a net violation.  CSM then reeled off four straight points, including three service aces by Missy Chapman to take a 25-19 lead, and take control of the match.  Janae Burt had an emphatic spike for the final point as the Hawks won the first game 30-21.

The second game started out tight as well, and was knotted at 9-9 after a CSM net violation.  However, bolstered by strong play in the backcourt, the Hawks outscored the Lakers 21-10 the rest of the way to win the second game 30-19.

Missy Chapman played well in the Libro position making several difficult plays, and Virginia Smith had excellent sets throughout the match.

"I thought our backcourt played well, we made some good passes", commented Ruble on the play of her back line.

The Lakers appeared to be worn out by the third game, as they fell behind early, and never challenged the Hawks as CSM completed the three game sweep with a 30-21 win.

"We will be working on defense, and service receive" said Head Coach Michelle Ruble.

"Our team is developing nicely, but there is still a lot of work to be done."

CSM will take the court next on Thursday, as they travel to Cecil for a 6:00 PM match, before traveling to Pennsylvania for the Butler Tournament this weekend.
