VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS ROCKVILLE
September 18, 2006 -
After getting off to a slow start in the
first two games, the CSM volleyball team put it all together in the third
game to complete a three game sweep of Rockville, 30-22, 30-21, and 30-14.
Top performers for the Hawks were Janae Burt with nine kills, Missy Chapman
with 19 digs, and Julie McGaughran with nine blocks.
CSM (12-8, 4-1) got off to a slow start in the first game, and trailed 11-6
in the early going. Deborah Rodrigues and Priscilla Pollack led the
attack for Rockville (3-4, 2-2) with several kills each. Trailing
17-12, the Hawks slowly inched their way back i nto the game. Nikki Agambar had two aces in the run that pulled CSM within one 17-16.
However a kill and a dink by Shenay Coley pushed the Knights ahead by three
at 20-17. CSM battled back to tie the score at 20-20 when Rachael Olup
tipped the ball to an open area.
(Janae Burt had nine kills for the Hawks)
Rockville took that last lead of the game 21-20 when the Hawks were unable
to return the ball, then CSM outscored the Knights 10-1 to finish the game
and win the game 30-22. Becca Steinbach and Janae Burt had kills
during the run, and Rachael Olup had an ace.
The Hawks again got off to a slow start in the second game, and the score
was tied 8-8 in the early going. CSM took the lead 9-8 on a Rockville
service error, and slowly put some distance between them and the Knights,
outscoring Rockville 9-4 to take a 17-12 lead. Rockville cut the
margin to four at 19-15 before the Hawks went on another run, outscoring the
Knights down the stretch 11-6 to capture the second game 30-21.
The third game was all CSM, as the Hawks raced to a 7-1 lead and never
looked back on the way to a 30-14 win.
"I was happy with the win and the way we finished strong", said Head Coach
Michelle Ruble. "We are going to work on our defense, starting the
match stronger, and minimizing unforced errors."
One area where the Hawks excelled against Rockville was their serving.
Out of 81 serves CSM was a perfect 100%, with eight aces.
The Hawks travel to Florida this weekend to play in the Pasco-Hernado
Tournament, where they will face stiff competition, including perennial
power Miami-Dade.
Of her expectations for this weekend Coach Ruble said, "We are looking
to raise the level of our play, and push us out of our comfort zone.
We are looking to play at a higher level when we come back."
