JOHN MITCHELL RETIRES AS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
COACH
July 1, 2008 -
John Mitchell has decided to "hang up his
whistle" after five years at the helm of the CSM women's basketball program.
Coach Mitchell brought much needed stability to the program that had seen two
different coaches in three years, after resuming play in 2000-01, after
the college had gone 14 years without a women's basketball team.
John
Mitchell was soft spoken in practice, but was an intense competitor in games.
His players always knew what was expected of them. His teams were known
for sharing the ball and finding the open man on offense, and running the
fastbreak at every opportunity.
Mitchell had an overall record of 47-72 at CSM. His best season was in
2006-07, when the Hawks finished 15-12, advanced to the second round of the
Region XX Tournament, and finished in the final four of the MDJUCO Tournament.
