HAWKS SPLIT BASKETBALL DOUBLEHEADER Wednesday, January 7 - The women's basketball team lost to 15th ranked Cecil 76-73, while the men's basketball defeated Takoma Park 86-74 in a basketball doubleheader played at the College of Southern Maryland. The Lady Hawks played even with #15 Cecil (8-1) for the first ten minutes of the opening half. The Seahawks went on a run during the later part of the 1st half, extending their lead to double digits, and led 44-33 at the break. Cheri Bryant and Sharonda Johnson paced Cecil with 12 and 11 points respectively. CSM (4-7, 2-2) came out strong to open the second half, outscoring Cecil 26-11 during the first twelve minutes. Kaleigha Gray hit a three pointer and then drove full court and hit a lay-up to give the Lady Hawks their first lead of the second half at 47-46. Cheyann Gilroy, who led CSM with 19 pts. also hit a couple of key jump shots during the run. The Lady Hawks extended the lead to 59-55 with 8:34 left. However Cecil battled back and took a seven point lead, with Cheri Bryant getting some key rebounds and put backs on her way to a game high 23 points. Cheyann Gilroy hit two baskets down the stretch, including a 3 pointer, but the Lady Hawks rally came up just short. In the nightcap, the CSM men's team (5-7, 2-3), jumped on top early, using full court pressure and a fastbreaking offense to extend their lead to double digits. Jerry Parker dominated inside, leading all scorer's with 29 points, including two dunks. Robbie Brisco added 17 for CSM. Ronald Jackson tried to rally Takoma Park (2-8) with 23 second half points (25 total), including five 3 pointers, but the Hawks never let the Falcons get closer then 11 pts. The men travel to Germantown on Saturday before returning home for games Monday against Maryland Bible (7:00 PM) and Wednesday against #1 ranked Cecil (7:00 PM). The women play at Harford on Friday, at Baltimore on Tuesday before returning home to host Catonsville on Saturday, Jan. 17 (8:00 PM). |
