HURRICANES BLOW BY HAWKS

Wednesday, December 10 - After a very tight game for the first 30 minutes, Louisburg College (8-1) used a 23-14 run over the last eight minutes to defeat CSM (3-4) 82-64.

Louisburg jumped to a 14-2 lead during the first six minutes of the game, and it looked like a repeat performance of their big win over the Hawks in the Pepsi Classic in November.  Pressure defense caused several CSM turnovers which Louisburg converted into fastbreak baskets.

But CSM adjusted to the Hurricanes pressure defense and had some fastbreak baskets of their own, and slowly worked their way back into the game.  Shanita McPherson's lay-up on a fastbreak gave the Hawks their first lead at 19-18 with 6:32 left, and the game remained close the rest of the half, with Louisburg holding a 30-29 lead at the break.

The second half picked up right where the first left off, with several ties and lead changes.  The Hawks last tie came at 14:42 when Sharron Miles hit a 3 pointer to knot the game at 40-40.

Miles led the Hawks in scoring with 15 points, while Kia Stewart and Cheyann Gilroy added 11 each.  Stewart had another good game on the boards, and helped beat the press by catching the ball at mid-court and beating her defender to the basket several times.

Cherie Mills and Mikasa Williams each scored 23 for Louisburg.

The Hawks will face Hagerstown on Friday, December 12, in a MDJUCO game at 4:30 in the Hawks Nest.  CSM is currently undefeated (1-0) in conference play.
