POTOMAC STATE RUNS PAST LADY HAWKS

Friday, November 14, 2003 - Potomac State (3-0) used a pressure defense and a relentless running game to defeat the CSM women's basketball team 97-81.  The Catamounts pressure defense caused numerous CSM turnovers which Potomac State converted into fastbreaks, as they raced to a 51-32 halftime lead.

When the fastbreak wasn't there, Potomac State made excellent back cuts to the basket and worked the ball inside for some easy shots.  The Hawks offense struggled in the first half, often settling for off balance or long range shots that didn't go down.  Kia Stewart's offense rebounding kept CSM close, while Erika Alt led Potomac State with 19 first half points.

CSM (1-1) made some excellent adjustments in the second half, and were able to cut into the Potomac State lead.  The Hawks went to a diamond and one defense on Alt, and held her to only four points in the second half.  CSM also was able to slow the tempo of the game down some, and executed the offense to get much better second half shots.

The Hawks were able to cut the lead to 64-50 with 14:14 left, but that was as close as they could come.

Kia Stewart led the Hawks with 26 points, and Cheyann Gilroy added 20.  Charlisa Cummins led the Catamounts with 23 pts., Erika Alt had 19, and Hyshea Ogbonna had 18 for Potomac State.

The Lady Hawks will be at home again on Wednesday to face Christendom College for a 4:30 tip-off, before traveling North Carolina next weekend (November 22 and 23) to compete in the Louisburg Tournament.
