HURRICANES STRUGGLE BEFORE BLOWING PAST HAWKS December 15, 2004 - The CSM women's basketball faced an undefeated Louisburg team, and played them as close as any team has all season, falling 73-41. The Hawks started out hot, as Sherrese Russell got an offense rebound and hit a lay-up, followed by a lay-up by Dana Ashton, and a jumper by Danielle Sturman to give CSM an early 6-0 lead. The Hawks started out in a zone that confused the Hurricanes, who were held scoreless for the first six minutes of the game. Louisburg switched to a pressing defense, and slowly got back into the game, forcing a few CSM turnovers and getting their fast break going. Even with the faster tempo, which was more to the Canes liking, they were unable to runaway from the Hawks, leading only 26-16 at halftime. Back to back baskets by Dana Ashton to start the second half cut Louisburg's margin to 26-20, but that was as close as CSM could come, as Louisburg slowly pulled away. Cold shooting and turnovers against the press are what ultimately did the Hawks in. Still, there were many positive signs for CSM tonight. When the Hawks were able to beat the press and setup their offense, they got good looks at the basket, shots they usually make. Dana Ashton played her best game of the year, scoring a team high 15 points, despite early foul trouble. Kaleigh Gray added 9 points for CSM (4-5, 0-3), all on three point shots, while Danielle Sturman chipped in with 8 points. Cherie Mills had 16 points for Louisburg (9-0) and Eboni Johnson and Nikkia Slade both added 12 points. The Lady Hawks next game will be Friday, when they host P.G. at 6:00 PM.
