LADY HAWKS DECLAW COUGARS IN FINAL HOME GAME

February 5, 2005 - On sophomore night, the women's basketball game put together one of their best performances of the year to defeat Frederick 67-56 in their final home game of the season.  Kaleigh Gray led the Hawks with 24 points, and Sherrese Russell added 18.  Before the game, CSM sophomore's Kedra Frisby, Kaleigh Gray, Sherrese Russell, Danielle Sturman, and Dana Ashton were honored.

CSM (8-11, 3-7) jumped in front early, and never trailed during the game.  Frederick (6-14) managed to tie the game twice in the first half, but each time the Hawks were able to pull away.  CSM went on a 12-6 run to end the half to lead 28-18 at the break.  Kaleigh Gray scored six of those points during the run.

The Hawks remained in control for most of the second half.  Frederick made a run mid-way through the half, when Jaline Gilliam's three pointer cut the CSM lead to 45-43 with 10:49 left.  CSM then went on a 20-11 run the rest of the half to put the game away.

Kaleigh Gray and Sherrese Russell ran the pick and roll to perfection, scoring key baskets time and again for the Hawks.  The two combined for 42 of the Hawks 67 points.  Although hobbled by an early injury during the game, Dana Ashton played tough on the inside, blocking several shots, getting some key rebounds, and adding 10 points.  Kedra Frisby used her quickness to harass the Cougars on defense, and added six points.

Marche Westry was the bright spot for the Cougars, scoring 21 of their points.

Although this was their last home game, the Lady Hawks still have plenty of games left in their season, beginning on Monday with a 7:30 PM game at Howard.
