CSM WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SIGNS FIVE RECRUITS FOR 2006-07

April 20, 2006 – The College of Southern Maryland Women’s basketball team finished a successful recruiting season by signing five players to letters of intent. The new recruits will join returning veterans Christina Simms, Melissa Mitchell, Brittany Vines, Shannon Wilson, Christine Johnson, and Ashley Driggins.

“This is the first time we’ve gotten two All SMAC players”, said Head Coach John Mitchell. “I think all five new players will contribute immediately.”

The incoming freshmen are Christina Quesenberry, Tanya Sites, Katherine Kidd, Cassie McMillan, and Christina Velez. Christina Quesenberry attended Chopticon High School. Quesenberry is a 5’11” lefthanded post player. The coaching staff is impressed with her aggressive play, and expects her to be a fine rebounder at the college level. Christina was selected All SMAC and All County.

A pair of recruits come from Northern High School. Tanya Sites is a guard/forward who has developed a well rounded game. She was an All-SMAC and All County performer. Her Northern teammate is Katherine Kidd, a 5’ 11” post player. Kidd was also an All County selection. She is a strong rebounder and excellent shooter with good range.

Cassie McMillan hails from Washington D.C. She is a solid left-handed guard, who the coaching staff expects to excel in up-tempo play. Christina Velez is the final member of the 2006-07 recruiting class. She is a point guard, who will be looking to be part of the rotation this fall.

Looking forward to next season, Coach Mitchell had this to say:

“I think we will have a good blend of returnees and new players. We will still be small but very flexible and fairly deep. The returnees seem dedicated to a summer of hard work. I wish it was October now. With what we have coming back, and Shannon’s (Wilson) health improving, I am pretty optimistic for next year.”
