LADY HAWKS WIN OPENER
November 8, 2005 -
The CSM women's basketball team won their
season opener 77-63 over Christendom College. Brittany Vines led the
Hawks with 29 points, Kalee Smith had 13 pts., and Shannon Wilson added 12
points to lead the Hawks.
It was the season opener for both teams, and it showed, as both teams played
tentatively and play was sloppy in the opening minutes. The Hawks held
a slender 13-11 lead with 10:15 left, before going on a 22-7 run to end the
half and take a 35-18 lead. The Hawks applied full court pressure,
causing numerous turn-overs, which led to some easy baskets.
Christendom (0-1) used the three pointer to get back in the game early in
the second half. Treys by Beth Thurn, Kate McKinnon, and Becca Harris
helped the Crusaders cut the lead to 52-44 mid-way through the second half.
Thurn led Christendom in scoring with 28 points (5-3 pointers), and McKinnon
finished 12 points (3-3 pointers).
Just like in the first half, CSM (1-0) put together a scoring run, going on
a 21-9 spurt to take a 73-53 lead with just over two minutes left to put the
game out of reach.
Brittney Vines and Shannon Wilson both drained two threes during the run,
and Kalee Smith and Ashley Driggins added some key baskets as well.
The Hawks travel to West Virginia this weekend to play in the Potomac State
tournament. CSM will face Mercyhurst Northeast at 4:00 PM on Saturday,
and then either Potomac State or Columbus State on Sunday. CSM won't
return home to the Hawks Nest until Nov. 29, when they open the MDJUCO
season with Howard at 5:30 PM.
