WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PREVIEW

November 13, 2006 - Last Season (2005-06) the women's basketball team finished with a record of 10-17 in an injury – plagued season.  Forward Kalee Smith (now at Pfeiffer College) enjoyed a wonderful season, setting 14 school records and being selected to the All-Maryland JUCO 2nd team and the All-Region 2nd team, despite missing half the year with a hand injury. Brittany Vines was also selected to the All Maryland JUCO team, and established school single season records for points scored, assists, and field goals made. When Smith was injured in mid-season, Christina Simms responded by scoring 16 points and grabbing 9 rebounds per game for the last half of the year. She established a school record by getting 19 rebounds (14 offensive) in a single game.

CSM will have a different look in 2006-07.  Although several key players have departed, the freshman class looks strong. Returning starters Brittany Vines, Christina Simms, Shannon Wilson, and Christine Johnson as well as returning 6th women Ashley Driggins should all be better players this year. Vines should finish the year as the school’s all time leader in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. Simms should pick-up where she left off, getting “double-doubles” every night. Wilson is a deadeye shooter with 3-point range. Johnson, brings stability and poise to the point position and “Giggles” is also a fine “crunch-time” player. Driggins is a high-energy instant offensive type of player who should thrive in an up-tempo game.
Newcomers Tanya Sites, Katie Kidd, Sharmaine Robin, Chris Velez and Brandy Thomas are all expected to make major contributions. Sites is an outstanding all-around player who will see action at many positions. Kidd will be a great asset to CSM’s post game. She is a rugged rebounder with a very soft shooting touch. Robin will bring a dimension to the team that has been lacking for several years. She is a lightening quick player who will be instrumental in creating an up-tempo atmosphere. Velez also is a quick player and will be used at both guard positions. Thomas will have a place in the backcourt rotation and she is a quick athletic player as well. Thomas will complete her soccer season before joining the team. (2006-07 game schedule)
