LADY HAWKS FELL OAKS IN FINAL HOME GAME

February 14, 2008 - On a night when CSM honored four sophomores playing their final home game, the women's basketball team defeated Salem (NJ) 80-57.

Brandy Thomas, Chris Velez, Katie Kidd, and Tanya Sites all played their final home game, and were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

Brandy Thomas is known for her quickness and explosiveness on the fast-break.  Hampered by injuries this year, she had a career high 10 steals in a game last season.

Chris Velez is a hard nosed player who steadily improved during her CSM career.  She made two free throws with three seconds left in regulation last year to help CSM win their first round game last year in the Region XX Tournament.

Katie Kidd leaves CSM after amassing over 400 rebounds during her career.  She is an outstanding student as well, and was selected to the MDJUCO All-Academic basketball team last year.

Tanya Sites is one of the most versatile players to wear the Hawks uniform, playing all five positions during her CSM career.  She leaves as one of the all time leaders in rebounds, assists, and free throw percentage.  She was selected to the MDJUCO team last year for her performance on the court, and the MDJUCO All-Academic team for her performance in the classroom.

The game was never in question, as CSM jumped to an early 6-0 lead.  The Hawks led by as much as sixteen, 35-19, before the Oaks trimmed the lead to 39-30 at halftime.

Salem could never get closer then seven points in the second half, as the Hawks controlled the second half.

Chris Velez played one of the finest games of her career, scoring 21 points (14 in the second half), several of them on spectacular drives to the basket.

Freshman Chantal Hebron added 17 pts., Tanya Sites 15 pts., and freshman Brooke Martin scored 12 pts.

Shakia Sistrunk led Salem with 14 pts., Chelsea Bowman added 12, and Shonna Carr was in double figures with 11 pts. for the Oaks.

CSM finishes the regular season with an overall record of 8-14, 1-9 in MDJUCO play.
