LADY HAWKS FALL TO WEST VIRGINIA IN OVERTIME Saturday, September 21 - The CSM women's soccer team battled the West Virginia JV even for 95 minutes, before Sarah Maddox slipped through the Hawk defense with 5:30 left in sudden death overtime to give West Virginia a 2-1 win. The Mountaineers (3-0) opened the scoring with 34:00 left in the first half. Kristina Guitierrez found Leah Ward on a throw in from the left side, and Ward headed the ball into the upper right corner of the net. CSM (2-3) dominated play for the next 14 minutes, but was unable to get any quality scoring chances. West Virginia stepped up the pressure for the final 10 minutes of the half, and only brilliant goalkeeping by Melanie Tyner kept the WVU lead at 1-0. The Mountaineers kept the pressure up to begin the second half, and had a goal called back for offside four minutes into the half. With only 2:40 left in the game, CSM's Julia Lufrui broke through the Mountaineer defense, out maneuvered two defenders, and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Megan McKinney got the assist. The Lady Hawks will be in action again tomorrow, when they host #9 ranked Louisburg, NC for a 12:00 noon contest. |
