LADY HAWKS FALL TO KNIGHTS IN OVERTIME October 6, 2004 - After coming from behind twice to tie the score, the CSM women's soccer team lost in overtime to Rockville 3-2. The Lady Hawks trailed most of the game, after Rockville's Yik Wing Ip received a pass from Lindsay Adam and scored to give the Knights a 1-0 lead with 18:20 left in the first half. Both teams took turns controlling play in the first half. Rockville dominated the first 10 minutes of the game, but was unable to get any quality scoring chances. CSM (3-5-1, 0-3) had a couple good scoring chances early in the half. Rachael Freeze drilled one off the side post on a free kick. Later, Kelly Mattingly made a nice crossing pass to Renee Flippin in front of the goal, but her shot went wide. CSM goalie Kelly Hickman kept the Hawks in the game with two diving saves. The first was on Ip, as she broke in alone just moments before her goal. The second was on Rebecca Howard, who broke in alone late in the half. Rockville had a slight lead in shots, 11-8, at the half. The Hawks were frustrated in their attempts to tie the game in the second half, and Rockville had the two best scoring chances. With 30:00 left, Ip centered the ball to Nicole Adam in front of the net, but her shot was wide. A few minutes later, Amy Van Horn broke in alone on goal, but also shot wide. With just 11:00 left in the game, CSM finally got the equalizer, when Tara Tomasello broke in on goal and got the ball to Larisa Gallagher, who found net to tie the game at 1-1. Less then a minute later, Rockville (7-2-2) regained the lead 2-1. Amy Van Horn broke in on goal, and as the Hawks tried to clear, they put the ball in their own net. A lot of teams would have given up after a disheartening goal like that, but CSM battled back, and tied the game once again with 7:30 left in the game. This time it was Gallagher feeding Tomasello who found the back of the net. CSM put the early pressure on in overtime, getting two corner kicks, but was unable to get a quality shot on net. Three minutes into the overtime, Rockville's Nicole Adam broke in on the left side and rifled one off the post. A minute later, with 6:00 left, Lindsey Adam broke in on the left and slipped the ball past a diving Hickman for the game winner. Overtime is sudden death, so the Hawks didn't have a chance to come back for the third time. For the game Rockville out shot the Hawks 21-16. The Hawks will travel to North Carolina this weekend, playing Louisburg, NC on Saturday, and Spartenburg Methodist (SC) on Sunday. |
