LADY HAWKS FALL TO ESSEX 5-1
September 9, 2005 - Kelly Townley
had a hat trick, and Navado Hood added two goals as Essex defeated the CSM
women's soccer team 5-1. Zehra Oztas scored for the Hawks, heading the
ball in after a long pass from Heather Reed.
Kelly Townley put
Essex (2-0) ahead 1-0 nine minutes into the game, when she looped the ball
over CSM goalkeeper Kate Goddard. She added her second goal with 16:50
left when an Essex shot hit the top post, and Townley was there to knock in
the rebound.
With 11:10 left,
Navado Wood broke in alone on goal. Hawk keeper Kate Goddard made a
diving save to knock the ball away, but Wood was able to get the rebound and
score, to put the Knights up 3-0 at the half. The score could have
been worse, except Goddard made an outstanding stop to rob Wood of another
goal earlier in the half.
Two minutes into
the second half, Townley got her third goal after receiving a long pass from
Angelo Cassano. Wood finished the Knights scoring, breaking in on goal
with 19:28 left in the game.
Zehra Oztas
put CSM (0-2) on the board with her header with 11:28 left in the contest.
The Hawks were able to press the attack into the Knights zone throughout the
game, but weren't able to put together the final pass to get quality scoring
chances. Essex had a slight edge in shots, 7-5.
The Hawks
next game will be under the lights at Anne Arundel on Tuesday (7:00 PM),
before returning home to face Louisburg on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:00 PM.
