HAWKS HOLD #2 HOWARD SCORELESS FOR HALF
BEFORE FALLING 3-0
October 3, 2005 -
The CSM women's soccer team battled the
second ranked team in the country (Division III) the Howard Dragons to a
draw in the first half. Howard (8-1-1, 5-0-1) had the ball in the Hawk
end most of the half, but the smothering CSM defense held the Dragons to
just three shots, two of them soft shots from long range.
In the second half, Howard scored three times in the first 15 minutes to
take control of the the game at 3-0. Aubrey Cronin crossed the ball to
Niki Hall, who put the Dragon's ahead 1-0 with 37:02 left. Laura
Robinson then scored two goals in less then a minute for the final 3-0
margin. Her first shot was off a free kick, and she was able to lift
it just over the outstretched arms of leaping Hawk goalie Katie Goddard.
Robinson's second goal came with 31:04 left, as she broke free down the
right side.
CSM (0-5-1, 0-4) was able to bear down and keep Howard off the board the
rest of the game, even playing a man down the last 21:21 after Sarah Deacon
received her second yellow card of the game and was ejected.
The Dragons kept the ball in the Hawk end of the field most of the game, out
shooting CSM 8-0. The Hawks did generate a few scoring chances, but
were unable to get their shots on net. With 20:00 minutes in the first
half Zehra Oztas saw her shot go wide off a direct kick. Later, Rowena
Conway just missed when her header went wide of the net off a corner kick.
In the second half, another corner kick went through the mouth of the Howard
goal, but the Hawks weren't able to get a foot on the ball and tip the ball
in. CSM also had a long direct kick from 35 yards out, but Heather
Reed's shot hooked to the left.
CSM will be at home the rest of the week, facing Allegany on Wednesday (3:00
PM), and Anne Arundel on Harvest Homecoming, Saturday, October 8 at 12:00
PM.
