HAWKS AND HURRICANES ALL TIED UP AFTER TWO OVERTIMES

September 18, 2005 - The CSM women's soccer team battled Louisburg College for 90 minutes of regulation and two ten minute sudden death overtimes, and came away with a 2-2 tie.  Melissa Mitchell and Zehera Dztas scored for the Hawks.

After CSM (0-3-1) had dominated play for the first six minutes of the game, Louisburg scored on their first foray into Hawk territory.  Erica Driver chipped one in from 25 yards out, squeezing it inside the left post past diving goalkeeper Katie Goddard, to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead with 37:34 left in the half.

The Hawks tied the game just two minutes later, when Melissa Mitchell broke in alone on goal, scoring with 35:01 left.

Play was even the rest of the half, with CSM holding a slight edge in shots 3-2.

Both teams has quality scoring chances early in the 2nd half.  Louisburg's Mandi Corsey had a wicked shot just five minutes into the half, but CSM keeper Katie Goddard made a diving save to keep the game knotted at 1-1.  Minutes later, Hurricane goalkeeper Liz Ries dove on a loose ball in a crowd in front of the net to keep the score even.

With 26:00 left, Kelly Falkner broke in alone for Louisburg, but shot wide.  Minutes later, the Hawks had two good scoring chances.  Zehra Dztas broke in alone, but shot high over the net.  Then Dztas fed Melissa Mitchell who broke in alone on net, but Hurricane keeper Liz Ries came out of the net to spoil the play.

The scoring drought was finally broken when Zehra Dztas looped in a long shot from just outside the penalty box, to put CSM in front 2-1, with 4:56 left in the game.

Louisburg (3-4-2) had an answering goal, when Lauren Barber found net, with Katie Goddard out of the net, with just 3:18 left in regulation.

Both teams finished regulation play with six shots apiece.

CSM had the fresher legs in the two overtimes, keeping play in the Louisburg end the majority of the time.  However the Hawks were only able to get one -quality scoring chance.  Melissa Mitchell had the only shot on goal for either team in the two overtimes.  She made a blistering shot at the lower left corner, but Louisburg goalkeeper Ries made a fine save.

The Hawks will host Catonsville in their next game, Friday, September 23 at 4:00 PM.
