LADY HAWKS LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO ANNE ARUNDEL
2-1
October 4, 2006 -
On a beautiful sunny 80 degree afternoon, the
CSM women's soccer team gave up a late goal with just 3:15 left to play, and
lost to Anne Arundel 2-1.
After trailing 1-0 for much of the game, CSM (2-3, 0-2) tied the score at
1-1 with 5:27 left to play. Sarah Arneson made a beautiful pass to
Brooke Good, who fired a rocket at Anne Arundel goalkeeper Amber Stapler.
Stapler was able to deflect the ball, but was unable to control the rebound.
The ball came to Alison Pancotti who scored into the open net to tie the
game.
Anne Arundel (7-3-2, 3-2-1) scored the winning after a scramble in front of
the Hawks goal. Hawks Goalkeeper Katie Goddard made a diving stop, but
the ball came loose directly in front of the CSM goal. As the Hawks
tried to clear, they accidentally kicked the ball into their own goal,
giving the Pioneers the 2-1 win.
Overall the game was very even, with CSM having the edge in territory in the
first half, and Anne Arundel putting more pressure on in the second half.
Shots on goal were even at 8-8.
The Pioneers scored with 3:55 left in the first half, to take a 1-0 lead at
halftime. Kristine Schafer sent a corner kick in front of the net, and
Courtney Highsmith sent a high arching shot just over Katie Goddard's
outstretched arms from 17 yards out.
The Hawks are off until Tuesday, October 10 when they host Howard at 3:00
PM.
