LADY HAWKS FALL TO DRAGONS 7-2
October 10, 2006 -
The CSM women's soccer team fell to
Howard 7-2 on a beautiful fall afternoon. Howard dominated play early,
and scored just eight minutes into the game, when Kelsey Cronin fed Lauren
Tutko breaking in towards goal, and Tutko was able to beat diving Hawk
goalkeeper Katie Goddard to put the Dragons ahead 1-0.
Howard (7-4-1, 4-1) continued to put the pressure on the Hawks goal, and
broke through for another goal with 29:54 left in the half to go in front
2-0. Again it was Kelsey Cronin with the assist as she fed Cassie
Colassard for the goal.
CSM (2-4, 0-3) scored on their first shot on goal, when Brooke Good fed
Alison Pancotti, who broke past the Howard defenders and beat Dragon keeper
Justine Matthews to cut the lead in half at 2-1, with 18:10 left in the
first half.
Howard continued to apply the pressure, as they outshot the Hawks 8-1 for
the half, but some fine defensive plays by CSM kept the game close.
With 11:00 left Dragon forward Mandy Pena-Ariet broke free on the left side,
but Hawk goalie Katie Goddard was able to charge the ball and smother it
before Pena-Ariet could get off a shot. Brandy Thomas was outstanding
for the Hawks as sweeper, outrunning Dragon attackers time and time again
and clear the ball away from the CSM goal.
The Dragons were able to get one more goal in the first half to take a 3-1
lead at halftime, as Lauren Tutko fed Whitney Rhodes for the score.
Howard increased their lead to 4-1 early in the second half, as a Tutko shot
hit the post, and Mandy Pena-Ariet was able to collect the rebound and
score.
With the game slipping away, the Hawks became energized, and begin applying
pressure on the Dragon goal. First Alison Pancotti grabbed a turnover
and raced in on goal, but Matthews was able to make the save. Moments
later Brooke Good had an excellent scoring chance, but her long arching shot
was tipped just over the top of the goal.
The Hawk persistence finally paid off, as Allison Pancotti sent a long
corner kick in front of the net, and Leigh Rice timed her header perfectly
and found the back of the net. The goal cut the Dragon lead in half at
4-2 with 31:48 left to play.
The decisive goal came five minutes later, when Howard's Lisa Compofelice
broke in alone on goal and put the Dragons in front 5-2. Nikki Hall
scored twice for Howard in the final minutes for the final 7-2 margin.
The Lady Hawks continue their homestand this week, as they play MDJUCO rival
Harford on Thursday at 3:00 PM, and step out of conference play on Sunday
when they face Sussex, NJ at 2:00 PM.
