LADY HAWKS DOWN ANNE ARUNDEL FOR 3rd WIN IN
A ROW
September 19, 2007 -
In a hard fought MDJUCO game, the CSM women's
soccer team defeated Anne Arundel 3-2 on a beautiful fall afternoon.
After a defensive struggle for most of the first half, the offenses suddenly
heated up with three goals in the final six minutes of the first half.
CSM (3-1, 2-1) scored first, as Sarah Arneson made a beautiful feed to
Crystal Gale who found net with 6:05 remaining in the first half.
Anne Arundel (2-4, 1-1) tied the game less then two minutes later.
Starting Hawk goalkeeper Cari Toman received a yellow card after a
collision, forcing her to sub out of the game and giving the Pioneers a free
kick just outside the penalty box. Substitute keeper Sammie Jo Goddard
stopped the initial shot by Jacquelyn D'Orsaneo, but was unable to control
the ball, and after a wild scramble in front of the net, Anne Arundel's
Bryann Vohs, was able to net the tying goal.
CSM scored with just :53 seconds left to take a 2-1 lead at the break.
Alison Pancotti broke through the defense, and as the Pioneer defenders
collapsed around her she made a beautiful pass to a wide open Ashley Simone
who gave the Hawks the lead.
In the second half, Jacquelyn D'Orsaneo tied the game for Anne Arundel as
she made a perfect shot into the upper left hand corner, just over the
leaping Cari Toman to knot the score at 2-2 with 20:23 to play.
It looked like CSM would retake the lead five minutes later, as Collen Loux
arched a shot that was headed just under the crossbar, but Anne Arundel
keeper Bryann Vohs, who played half the game in the field, was able to knock
away with a spectacular save.
The Hawks scored the game winning goal with 12:20 left, when Ailison
Pancotti hit the upper right corner from 18 yards out.
CSM outshot Anne Arundel 14-4. The Pioneers made several forays into
CSM territory, but time after time the speedy Brandy Thomas was able to
outrace the attackers and steer the ball out of harms way.
The team travels to New Jersey this weekend to play Sussex and Morris,
before returning home next Wednesday, September 25 to face Frederick in
another MDJUCO match-up.
