WOMEN'S SOCCER SPLITS PAIR IN NC

October 15, 2007 - The CSM women's soccer team traveled to North Carolina for a pair of games last weekend, falling to Louisburg 4-3, and defeating Cape Fear 4-2.

In the first game on Saturday, Louisburg blitzed the Hawks with three early goals to claim a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game.  Kellie Shropshire scored the first Hurricane goal after a cross from Louise Ross.  Ross scored the next two Louisburg goals, breaking through the Hawk defense for her first, and receiving a pass from Jess Tobiassen for her second, putting the Canes up 3-0.

The Hawks battled back, scoring their first goal with 20:00 left in the first half when Crystal Gale fed Allison Pancotti, who broke through the Louisburg defense to cut the lead to 3-1.

Gale and Pancotti teamed up again once again to cut the Louisburg lead to just one at 3-2.  Gale fed Pancotti who broke in alone on goal and found net for her second goal of the day just before halftime.

Pancotti got her third goal of the day three minutes into the second half after a feed from Sammie Jo Goddard, pulling the Hawks even at 3-3 with 42:00 to play.

Louisburg (10-8) got the game winning goal with 30:00 to play.  After the Hawks were called for a foul, Lottie Birdsall-Strong hit a high arching shot from 30 yards out, just eluding the outstretched arms of CSM goalkeeper Cari Toman.

The Hawks buzzed around the Hurricane goal and had several chances to tie, but were unable to net the equalizing goal.

On Sunday CSM scored first against Cape Fear when Colleen Loux fed Ashley Simone, who made a perfect shot into the right top corner putting the Hawks up 1-0 with 30:00 to play in the half.

Cape Fear scored twice within seven minutes to take a 2-1 lead.  First Jordan Colville slipped through the Hawk defense and broke in on goal to tie the game, then Colville fed Kimberly Keener, who gave the Sea Devils a 2-1 lead with 15:00 left in the first half.

Playing from behind once again, the Hawks tied things up with 4:00 left before halftime when Sammie Jo Goddard fed Ashley Simone, who scored on a beautiful shot from 15 yards out.

It didn't take the Hawks long to regain the lead in the second half, as Simone scored her third goal of the game at the 42:00 minute mark, heading the ball in off Allison Pancotti's corner kick.

Allison Pancotti scored a brilliant goal to give CSM some breathing room, as she made a perfect shot from 35 yards out on a free kick, giving the Hawks a 4-2 lead with 16:00 to play.

Cape Fear (7-3) applied intense pressure during the last 15:00 as they looked to tie, and only stellar defense kept the Sea Devils at bay.  Pancotti, moved to defense after an injury to Brandy Thomas early in the game anchored the defense, and Hawk goalkeeper Cari Torman made several outstanding saves to ensure the Hawk win.

CSM improves to 6-3-1 on the year, 3-1-1 in MDJUCO.

CSM plays a key MDJUCO game Tuesday at Howard, before playing their final home game of the season Friday, Oct. 19 against Delaware Tech (Terry) at 3:00 PM.
