WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO ROCKVILLE IN OPENER
September 3, 2008 -
The CSM women's soccer team opened their
season on a hot, humid afternoon, with the game time temperature at 87, and
came up on the short end of a 3-0 score.
The first half was a defensive struggle, with most of the play in midfield.
Rockville (1-0) got on the board with 13:43 left in the half, as Julia
Bethge outraced the Hawk defense on a long lofting pass, to put the Knights
up 1-0.
Rockville's second goal came with just 31.7 seconds left before the break,
as Kyleigh Razmic scored on a short shot in front of the net.
The Knights outshot CSM 7-1 for the half.
In the second half the heat took its toll on the Hawks, and CSM played a
good portion of the second half a man down, and about 20 minutes nine vs.
eleven. Still, the Hawks only gave up one goal, as Julia Bethge scored
her second goal of the day after a scramble in front of the net.
Lacey Johnson had an outstanding game in goal for the Hawks, making nine
saves, including a spectacular diving stop to deny Rockville another goal.
Johnson was aggressive in charging the ball, and grabbed several corner
kicks out of the air to stymie the Rockville offense.
Jamie Palmer played a strong game on defense for CSM (0-1), outdueling the
Rockville players time and again and clearing the ball.
The Hawks best scoring chance came mid-way through the second half, as
Taylor Ramsey had the ball on the left side and the keeper was out of
position, but Ana Santiago was able to recover and dive on the ball before
Ramsey could get off a shot.
The Hawks travel to play defending National Champion Catonsville on Sept. 9
(7:00 PM), before hosting Essex on Fall Festival, Sept. 13, at 12:00 PM.
