Scholarships

Scholarships at CSM are sponsored by the college, the state of Maryland, and by private organizations, businesses, and individuals. Some scholarships are administered through the Financial Assistance Department.  

To be considered for scholarships administered by the Financial Assistance Department, students must complete Step.1 Applying for Financial Assistance section.  Unless noted below, there is no separate application for these programs. Upon selection by the College's Scholarship Committee,  recipients will be notified.  Special Note:  Programs below that have an “*” require the FAFSA to be filed by March 1.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND ADMINISTERED SCHOLARSHIPS:

    bullet *  Alumni Scholarship: Established in 1985 and funded by the then CCCC Alumni Assoc. This scholarship offers financial assistance in varying amounts to students who are enrolled full-time, with a minimum of 12 credits, a 3.0 grade point average, and demonstrate financial need.

    The Boeing Company Scholarship:  Established in 2001, this scholarship provides up to $3000 to students from Charles, Calvert and St. Mary's counties majoring in engineering.

    bullet J. N. Carsey Scholarship: Established in memory of J.N. Carsey,  CSM's first president. This award is for students participating in the college's Concurrent Enrollment or Dual Enrollment programs.  High school juniors and seniors who are residents of Charles, Calvert, or St. Mary's counties and are attending public or private school or are enrolled in an accredited home school program are eligible to apply.  Recipients must enroll to receive an award. Applications are available from Admissions Department.

    bullet Castles and Foundations Scholarship: Established in 1999 by Janet and Mick Donahue, this scholarship provides tuition, fees and books assistance in varying amounts to a resident of St. Mary's County with financial need.  Applicants must possess at least a 2.00 CSM GPA to receive this scholarship, and recipients must maintain at least a 2.75 GPA to retain the award.  Full-time or part-time students are eligible to apply.

    * Charles County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship:  CSM offers financial assistance in varying amounts to students who are Charles County residence, and demonstrate financial need.

    Christopher Chinault Scholarship:  This scholarship are awarded each year to students enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program at CSM.  A separate application is available at the Financial Assistance Dept. at the La Plata Campus, with a April 10thdeadline.

     

    bullet J. Ivey Cline Memorial Scholarship: Established in memory of J. Ivey Cline, this award may be used toward tuition, fees, books, and supplies. Award amounts vary from year to year. Applicants must be from the Tri-County area and must enroll at least half-time.

    * Janie Schultz Collins Scholarship:  Established in 2005 by Janie Schultz-Collins, this scholarship will provide financial assistance in the form of tuition and books for nursing students reside in Charles or St. Mary's County.  To be eligible for assistance, the recipient must have served in a local 4-H club in Charles or St. Mary's County and must demonstrate financial need.


    bullet Continuing Education Tuition Assistance: CSM offers financial assistance for students enrolled in a Continuing Education occupational/workforce training program.  To be eligible the student must demonstrate "financial need".  This need is determined by filing the Tuition Assistance Application with FAD.   Applicants may download  the Tuition Assistance Application or request one from the Financial Assistance Department (FAD) at any campus.  Funding is limited.
    Awards are on a first come, first serve basis.


    bullet Cravat Memorial Scholarship: Established by the estate of Harland and Lula Cravat, these awards are available in varying amounts to Charles County residents attending CSM on at least a half-time basis.

    bullet Russell Gordon Croft Scholarship:  Established in 2000 by Gordon Croft, this scholarship provides tuition, fees, books, or supplies, as the individual case may dictate to first year CSM students from southern part of Charles County, defined as south of MD Route 225 from La Plata to Mason Springs and south of MD Route 6 from La Plata to the St. Mary's County line.

    bullet * L. K. Farrall III Memorial Scholarship: Established by the family of L.K. Farrall III, this scholarship is awarded in varying amounts toward the cost of tuition, fees, books and supplies.  Applicants must be Charles County residents.  Applicants must also be from a single parent family, demonstrate financial need, and have at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA for prior study.  Recipients may enroll either full-time or part-time, and must maintain at least a 2.75 GPA to retain the award.  

    bullet Joseph Rice and Mae Fauth Memorial Scholarship: Established by the estate of Dr. Mae Fauth, this award offers up to $2,000 toward the cost of tuition, fees, books and supplies for the sophomore year to an outstanding freshman majoring in the humanities.  Recipients must enroll on a full-time basis

    bullet Forty & Eight Society Scholarship: Sponsored by La Societe Des 40 Hommes Et 8 Chevaux, Voiture 456, this award offers varying amounts of assistance to second-year nursing students at the college. Recipients must be residents of Charles, Calvert, or St. Mary's County and enroll on at least a half-time basis.

     

    bullet Matthew William Hancock Music Scholarship: Established in 1988 in memory of Matthew W. Hancock, this award is presented to a Charles County resident majoring in music or music education at the College of Southern Maryland. Award amounts will vary from year to year.

      Kiwanis Club of Waldorf Scholarship: This scholarship provides up to $500 toward tuition, fees, and books to a Charles County resident attending CSM on at least a half-time basis.

    bullet La Plata Lions Club / Milton M. Somers Scholarship: This award is available to a graduating senior from either La Plata or McDonough High School.

    bullet *The Helen and Henry Lawlor Scholarship: Established through gifts from the family and friends of Helen and Henry Lawlor by Christ Church, Port Tobacco Parish, this scholarship provides up to $1000 for an academic year toward the cost of tuition, fees, and required books. The applicant must be a Charles County resident who is a single parent enrolled in a degree program at CSM and who has completed at least nine credits with at least a 2.0 grade point average. The recipient must demonstrate financial need, enroll on at least a half-time basis, and maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average. Preference will be given to residents of the town of La Plata.

    CSM Leonardtown Student Assoc. KickOff Scholarship: To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be attending the Leonardtown Campus.  Student name must also appear on the sign in log for the Leonardtown Kick Off to College event; the student must attend three (3) separate sessions at Kick-Off, complete an essay cover sheet and compose a 500-700 word essay about “How Kick Off has impacted their preparedness for college.” Applicants shall be screened and selected by CSM Leonardtown selection committee consisting of a staff person, faculty representative, and a representative from the Leonardtown Student Association.  This award offers assistance toward tuition, mandatory fees and books.

    William D. Lyon Memorial Scholarship:  Student must enroll in courses related to the vocational trades. Must have family income of less than $40,000 per year and have financial support of children less than 18 years of age.  Upon completion of coursework, the family of William D. Lyon requests that 10% of the money received is donated back to the Lyon fund within two years. Assistance is applied towards tuition, fees, books, or supplies as the individual case may dictate.

    *Ed Matthews, Jr. Scholarship: This scholarship is for residence of Charles County, who show financial need, and are currently enrolled or intend to enroll at CSM and may be either full-time or part-time.  The individual shall be degree-seeking as CSM and have placed in Developmental Math 0800 or 0900.  Candidates must have a minimum CSM GPA of 3.00 in prior academic study and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.00 in any one semester of college study in order to receive financial support for the following semester.  A student is eligible for up to (2) consecutive years of financial support. This scholarship provided assistance towards tuition, fees, and books.


    bullet Mary Matula Scholarship: Established by the Waldorf Jaycees in memory of long-time La Plata High School teacher Mary Matula, this award provides $1000 for one academic year to a graduating senior from La Plata High School planning to attend CSM.  Recipients must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average and enroll on a full-time basis.

    *Maurice J. McDonough Scholarship Endowment: Recipients must be Charles County residents in the McDonough District with a 2.0 in prior academic study and must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 in any one semester in order to receive financial support for the following semester. Recipient is eligible for up to (2) consecutive years of financial support.  Enrolled in either full or part-time program of study.  Award covers tuition, fees, books or supplies as the individual case may dictate.  Applicants must demonstrate financial need.


      Gertrude Wooddy Mitchell Nursing Scholarship: Sponsored by the Waldorf Jaycees, this award is given to a student enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing curriculum at CSM. The award covers up to $500 per semester toward the cost of tuition, fees, and books. Recipients must be Charles County residents and enroll on at least a half-time basis.

    bullet James C. Mitchell Nursing Scholarship: Established in the will of Judge James C. Mitchell, this award is made to a student entering the Associate Degree Nursing program at the college. This scholarship varies in amount for an academic year, usable for tuition, fees, and books.

    *Dr. Nallan Ramakrishna Endowed Scholarship Endowment:  Established in 2003 by Dr. Nallan Ramakrishna, the Dr. Nallan Ramkrishna Scholarship will provide financial assistance in the form of tuition, fees and books to CSM students.  Applicants shall be degree-seeking, enrolled either full-time or part-time, must demonstrate financial need and have at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA for prior study and must maintain at least a 2.00 GPA to retain the award.


    bullet Brian Ramsey Memorial Scholarship: Established by the Waldorf Jaycees in memory of former Jaycee President Brian Ramsey, this award provides up to $2,000 toward the cost of tuition, fees, and books. Applicants must be Charles County residents, enroll full-time, and have at least a 2.0 grade point average to retain the award.

    *St. Mary’s County Government Scholarship Fund: Candidates must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher from a high school or transfer college or must provide two letters of recommendation from professional sources if GPA of 2.5 or higher was not attained within the ten year period preceding application for the scholarship. Students must be residence of St. Mary’s County, and show financial need.  Assistance is applied towards tuition, and books.

     

    bullet Silver Hill Lions Club Scholarship: This award provides up to $1000 each toward tuition, fees, and books to a graduating high school senior from Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's counties.  Applicants must have at least a 3.0 high school grade point average and plan to enroll full-time.

    John M. Sine Scholarship: Established to honor CSM past president John M. Sine, this award is based on exceptional academic achievement in high school and/or in college, and is available to tri-county residents.  Applicants who have graduated from high school within the past two years must have at least  a 3.0 high school GPA, or have accumulated at least 12 credits of college work with at least a 3.0 college GPA.  Students out of high school more than two years must have accumulated at least 12 credits of college work with at least a 3.0 GPA.   Recipients of this scholarship must enroll at least half-time and maintain at least a 2.75 college GPA to retain their scholarships.

    Jack Love Sprague Scholarship:  Established in 2005 by the family of Jack Love Sprague, this scholarship will provide financial assistance to a CSM student in his/her second year of study in the college's Physical Therapist Assistant Program.

    bullet James A. Sweatt Scholarship: Sponsored by the Waldorf Jaycees, this award offers $1000 toward tuition, fees, and books. Applicants must be Charles County residents, maintain a 2.0 grade point average, and enroll on a full-time basis.

    *Helen and Mickey Todd Scholarship:  This scholarship provides financial assistance for two academic years to students who demonstrate financial need and maintain a 3.0 and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits for each academic year.


    bullet Waldorf Lions Club Scholarship: This award offers up to $1000 toward tuition, fees, and books. Applicants must be Charles County residents and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.  Recipients must enroll on a full-time basis.

    *Joanne Zwick Memorial Scholarship: Available for a second year nursing student who demonstrates financial need.  This award offers assistance toward tuition, fees, books and supplies.

    Brian Ramsey Memorial Scholarship: Established by the Waldorf Jaycees in memory of former Jaycee President Brian Ramsey, this award provides up to $2,000 toward the cost of tuition, fees, and books. Applicants must be Charles County residents, enroll full-time, and have at least a 2.0 grade point average to retain the award.

    SCHOLARSHIPS NOT ADMINISTERED BY THE COLLEGE:

    To be considered for these scholarships, the student must apply directly to the sponsoring organization. The organization then screens the applications and makes the scholarship selection.


    bullet Maryland State Scholarships:  The Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA), under the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), administers several programs, the largest of which are:  the MD Educational Assistance Grant, the MD Senatorial Scholarship, the MD House of Delegates Scholarship, MD State Nursing   Scholarship, MD Child Care Provider Scholarship, MD Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health Workforce Tuition Assistance Program, MD Guaranteed Access Grant, MD Sharon Christa McAuliffe Memorial Teacher Education Award, and the MD HOPE Scholarship.
      Of particular interest to CSM students transferring to four-year colleges in Maryland is the new Community College Transfer Student HOPE Scholarship.  Students apply for the Educational Assistance Grant and the Senatorial Scholarship by filing the FAFSA prior to March 1.  Contact your state Delegate directly to be considered for the House of Delegates scholarship.  There are separate applications for the Maryland HOPE Scholarships and the State Nursing Scholarship which can be obtained at the Financial Assistance Department.  For further information or to check on the status of any awards offered to you by the OSFA, visit MHEC's website at http://www.mhec.state.md.us/ or contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance at 839 Bestgate Road, Suite 400, Annapolis, MD 21401, (800) 974-1024. 

    bullet Charles County Commissioners Nursing/Allied Health Scholarship: Award is for Charles County residents enrolled in the clinical portion of the nursing or specific allied health programs; there is an employment obligation attached to this scholarship.  For further information, visit the CC Commissioners Nursing/Allied Health Scholarship website at http://www.charlescounty.org/commissioners/nursing/ or write to the Office of the County Commissioners, P.O.     bullet Indian Head Lions Club Scholarship: This award is available to a graduating senior from Lackey High School who is a Charles County resident and who plans to attend CSM. Application should be made through the guidance office at Lackey High School.

    bullet McDonough Charity School Scholarship: Award amounts for this scholarship vary and may be used toward the cost of tuition and fees. Applicants must reside in the exact geographic area of Charles County prescribed in Maurice McDonough's will. Applications are available from McDonough High School, the Financial Assistance Department at CSM, or McDonough Charity School, P. O. Box 607, La Plata, MD 20646.

    bullet Civista Hospital Auxiliary-Health Career Scholarships: The Civista Auxiliary offers several scholarships each year to students residing in Charles County. Applications are available at CSM and high school guidance offices, as well as from the Civista Auxiliary Scholarship Committee, c/o Civista Hospital, La Plata, MD 20646.

    bullet Joann Zwick Memorial Scholarship: This award offers a variable amount of assistance (usually $600-$700 per year) to a second-year nursing student at CSM. Applications should be sent directly to the chairperson of the Nursing Department at CSM.

    bullet Charles County Scholarship Fund, Inc.: Students can apply for several different scholarships through this fund, some usable at CSM only, others for the college of the student's choice. Applications are available from the financial assistance office at CSM, each high school guidance office, or from Ms. Brenda Smith, Board of Education, P.O. Box 2770, La Plata, MD 20646.

    bullet Burger King Scholarship Fund:  The Burger King Scholarship Fund, sponsored by Kathleen and William Neblett of KBJN, Inc., a franchisee of Burger King, will provide students with an award of $500.00 per semester towards tuition and fees at CSM.  To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must: enroll at least part-time in a program of study at CSM, maintain at least a 2.00 grade point average each semester, and either be employed or obtain employment at a Burger King restaurant owned by Kathleen and William Neblett for a minimum of 20 hours per week. The scholarship will remain in effect during the student's tenure of employment at a Burger King restaurant owned by Kathleen and William Neblett.

    Greater Waldorf Jaycees Foundation Scholarship: These awards are made to graduating high school seniors from Charles County high schools who plan to attend CSM.  Eligibility is based on the community service and academic achievement of the applicant.     bullet Walter Grove II Memorial Art Scholarship:  Established by the family and friends of Walter Grove II, this scholarship provides funding to CSM students from the Charles, Calvert and St. Mary's counties who will study art at CSM.  Applications can be obtained form the Fine Arts and Humanities Department at CSM.
