Envision yourself

  • arriving at the hospital emergency room and receiving immediate attention from outstanding healthcare professionals trained on state-of-the-art equipment;
  • being met by a compassionate, professional, experienced medical assistant at a doctor’s office;
  • placing your loved one in a nursing center and knowing she is surrounded by highly trained professionals who give her the care she needs;
  • receiving care from a home health nurse in a timely manner after being discharged from the hospital.

Make a Difference

You have probably recognized the healthcare workforce shortage in Maryland for what it is – a public health crisis. Your funding will help the college equip a simulation lab on each of the three campuses. This virtual healthcare facility will include patient simulators, electric beds, emergency room trauma carts, computerized documentation system, and sophisticated diagnostic and interventional equipment. Simulation labs will allow more students to be trained, addressing this urgent need. This will also enhance their learning experience.

The College of Southern Maryland offers education and training programs for more than 75% of the top 10 demand healthcare occupations requiring an associate’s degree or less academic preparation. Program expansions are required to deliver nursing and healthcare programs on all three campuses in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties.

Funds will be used for:

  1. simulation lab on each campus, including patient simulators, electric beds, emergency room trauma carts, computerized documentation system, and Medical Lab Technology (MLT) program equipment;
  2. increased resources and technology needed at each campus to better serve the community with a sufficient number of well-trained and highly-qualified healthcare professionals.
