Welcome to the College of Southern Maryland’s Medical Coding site. The increasing use of electronic health records will continue to push job growth much faster than average, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The best job prospects will be available to specialists with a strong understanding of technology and computer software.

This certificate program provides the knowledge and skills needed to classify medical data from patient records for submission to insurance companies or the government for reimbursement of expenses, and to researchers and public health officials to monitor trends in healthcare. Students develop skills in accurate interpretation of patient diagnosis and treatment descriptions; the ICD, CPT and HCPCS Level II coding systems; and health information documentation.

Students who complete the program are eligible to take the Coding Specialist Certification examination sponsored by the American Health Information Management Association. Most employers prefer to hire credentialed medical record and coding technicians.
After 25-plus years as a medical coder herself, CSM's Medical Coding Program Coordinator Towanda Horton-Short knows what students entering medical coding will need to make it in the real world and she works hard to share that information. READ MORE
