Welcome to the College of Southern Maryland’s Pharmacy Technician site. Job opportunities for pharmacy technicians are expected to be good, especially for those with certification or previous work experience.

The College of Southern Maryland offers two opportunities to become a Pharmacy Technician. For more information click here.

This certificate program prepares pharmacy technicians to work under the direction of a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians stock and inventory prescription and over-the-counter medications; maintain written or computerized patient medication records; count or pour medication into dispensing containers; prepare sterile intravenous medications; type prescription labels; prepare insurance claim forms; and provide direct customer service.

Students who complete the Pharmacy Technician certificate program are eligible to take the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE). Certification through this PTCE may enhance an applicant’s prospects for employment and is required by some states and employers. While there is no national training standard for pharmacy technicians, employers generally favor applicants who have formal training, certification, or previous experience.
As CSM’s coordinator for the Pharmacy Technician certificate program, Kay Zalesney feels confident that graduates of the program will have little problem finding jobs, even in a sluggish economy. READ MORE
