NURSING ASSISTANT
Nursing Assistants are licensed to perform selected nursing skills as routinely delegated by a nurse. The college offers the opportunity to train for three levels of certification - certified nursing assistant, geriatric nursing assistant, and certified medicine aide. Each has its own set of qualifications, licensing requirements and State of Maryland application procedures.

Registrants successfully complete HTH-5590 with a CMP.
Specific admissions requirements
- Hold a current, active, unencumbered Maryland nursing assistant (CNA/GNA) certificate
- Have current employment in an ICF/MR or licensed nursing home:
- 2 years full time work experience as a CNA in a facility licensed under 42CFR Part 483 et.seq.
-OR- - 1 year full time work experience as a GNA (2000 hours) in a facility licensed in Maryland under COMAR 10.07.02
- 2 years full time work experience as a CNA in a facility licensed under 42CFR Part 483 et.seq.
- Be recommended for CMA training program by the Director of Nursing of the employing ICF/MR or licensed nursing home
- Place at the required levels on the math and reading pre-tests.
Professional organization resources and certification information
Update Course
An update course is required of every CMA within every two-year certification cycle as a condition of maintaining certification. This course is offered every other month at one of the CSM campuses.
