Continuing Education Program: Registered Nurse Refresher
Program Description & Courses
Nurses, who have not practiced 1000 hours of nursing in more than five years, must take two refresher courses that have been approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing for reentry into active nursing practice. Content focuses on current nursing practice and the evolving role of nurses within a changing health care delivery system. The courses: NUR-5010, consists of the theory component, and NUR-7010, consists of the laboratory and clinical components.
Registrants successfully complete NUR-5010 and NUR-7010.
Prerequisites
In order to participate in the clinical/practicum at CSM, a student will need to submit prior to beginning NUR-7010 the following list of items:
- Currently enrolled in NUR-5010 with completion of exams I through VII, or successful completion of NUR-5010 within the last nine months. If the student did not attend CSM for NUR-5010/theory, he/she will need to submit a copy of his/her theory certificate.
- An inactive, active, or temporary Maryland nurse's license. You must consult with theinstructor before obtaining a temporary license since there is a 90-day limit and it is not renewable.
- Completion of the health forms.
- The Health Form requires titers that may take some time to get results.
- Also, if your PPD is not current you will need two-step results documented in millimeters (including 0 mms; not just Negative).
- Current CPR card (American Heart Association BLS for the Health Care Provider or American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer.)
- A white uniform/scrubs, watch with a second hand or digital read, and a stethoscope.
- Successful completion of the skills competencies prior to starting the clinical practicum.
- Completion of the Self Learning Packet and submission to the course instructor the day of Orientation.
- There will be a skills refresher check off day prior to the start of the clinical.
- Students are required to provide proof of a criminal background check at the student's expense. Students may be required to provide proof of health insurance and a negative drug screen at the request of agencies and at the student's expense.
