My WebCT Answers

Attachments in WebCT

If you are enrolled in Web-classes at the College of Southern Maryland, you will be attaching assignments via the Web. It is important to understand how to do this properly because you want to ensure your assignment gets sent before the due date.  If you are enrolled in lecture classes, the teacher may prefer this method as well.  For those who are in certain English classes, some instructors participate in the OWL program, in which you are required to submit papers via WebCT.

Here are the proper steps of attaching a document (file) in WebCT:

  1. Save the document to a folder that you use frequently.
It is best to save the document to your Desktop for easier access. However, it does not matter where you save the document. Just keep in mind where the document is located because you will have to attach it in WebCT (see Saving a Document).
  2. Login to myCSMD and then select WebCT.
  3. Once the WebCT loads, click on the course you wish to attach the document.
  4. When the course page loads, click on Assignments (left side of the screen).
  5. Once the Assignment page loads, click on the assignment you are interesting in submitting to your instructor.
  6. To attach the document (file) you must hit on Add Attachments.
  7. A new window will pop up (Get Files) for you to select the document.
  8. To the left of the window, you will see My Files and My Computer.
  9. Click on My Computer.
  10. Another window will pop up for you to select your document.
  11. If your document is not appearing in the folder that it currently is set up, you must change your location.
  12. To change the location, click in the drop down menu at the top of the window (Look in).
  13. You will be able to find your document by clicking on the proper folder.
  14. Once you attach your assignment, you must click Submit.
If your instructor insists that he/she would just like a response and not an attachment. Such as, just typing your response in the Submission text box, keep in mind it will time out. If this happens, all your work will be lost and not saved. So it is best to type that assignment in a word document and save it to your computer. After that, copy and paste that document in the Submission text book.

To copy and paste a document, here are the following steps:

  1. Open your document.
  2. Hit Ctrl + A (this will select all the text)
  3. Hit Ctrl + C (this will copy all the text)
If you close out of Word before you paste your document in WebCT and a message pops up, such as the one below: Click Yes.
  4. Open up the Assignment you wish to submit in WebCT.
  5. Hit Ctrl + V (this will paste all text)
  6. Click Submit.

Your assignment has been uploaded.

How to Access WebCT

If you are newly enrolled at the College of Southern Maryland you may have questions about WebCT. WebCT is your portal to your online courses. If you are taking online courses, you must know how to access your WebCT account.

Step One
First, it is important that you know what your username and password are for your myCSMD account. In order to access WebCT, you must log into your myCSMD account.

For those who are new students, your username and password would look similar to the following example:

Student's Full Name  Student's ID (seven digits)
Scott Blair Carcillo 0000123

If your name is Scott Blair Carcillo, your username would be: sbcarcillo.
If your student ID number is 0000123, your temporary password is: 0000123.

Step Two
Once you login to myCSMD for the first time, you will be required to reset your password and answer respond questions. Once you reset your password, you will be logged out, and you will have to log back into myCSMD again. Upon your login, you will be asked to set up response questions. The last question is User Supply. This is a question you make up yourself, such as, What is your Favorite Sports Team? That question can be anything, whatever is easiest for you to remember. Please do not make the question fairly easy, because that will give leeway for someone to gain access to your account.

Step Three
After you set up your response questions; you will be directed to your myCSMD Web page. If you are interested in accessing your WebCT account, you must click on My WebCT (Blackboard CE). This will be under myOnline Courses.

Step Four
After you click on My WebCT (Blackboard CE) you will be taken to your WebCT shell. All your online courses will be on the main page. If your classes are not shown, please be aware that they will not be displayed until the start date of the course.
*For example, if your course does not start until January 28th, then that course will not be shown into January 28th.

If you have registered and have fully paid and your course(s) is not appearing in WebCT after the course date, please contact the Help Desk at (301) 934-2251 x4357. Before you call, please make sure that you have your student ID ready and the course and course section that are not being shown in WebCT.

Returning Students
If you are a returning student and you are having an issue logging into your myCSMD account, because you forgot your password, you can click here to reset your password. If you are having trouble answering your response questions, please contact the Help Desk at301.934.2251 x4357.
