CompTIA Security+™ certification validates knowledge of communication security, infrastructure security, cryptography, operational security, and general security concepts. It is an international, vendor-neutral certification that is taught at colleges, universities and commercial training centers around the world.
The CompTIA Security+ Exam is an industry accepted certification for accessing the security knowledge of professionals. It is designed with the inputs of leading security experts and in partnership with some of the biggest users of security services including NIST, FBI and the US Secret service.
This certification can be used to satisfy requirements of an elective in Microsoft MCSE or MCSA certification and also in the MCSE/MCSA security track.
In addition this certification meets the requirements in the DoD 8570.01-M directive for government employees and contract worker training.

The timeline is the approximate amount of time that a student will require to complete the training series.

While not a prerequisite, it is recommended to complete Network+ Certification before completing Security+ Certification.

Security+ Exam
Number of Questions: 100
Question Format: Conventional
Minimum passing score: 768 from a range of 100-900
Time: 90 minutes
Exam Fee: $244
Testing Center: CSM - Please call (301) 934-7657 for scheduling information.
Retake Policy: CompTIA does not require a waiting period for the second attempt. However for the third and subsequent attempts the candidate has to wait 30 days after the last attempt before retaking the exam.
The exam comprises 5 domains as listed below in order of exam importance:
- General Security Concepts- 30%
- Communication Security- 20%
- Infrastructure Security- 20%
- Basics of Cryptography- 15%
- Operational / Organizational Security-15%

Test at CSM
The CSM Testing Center offers the Security+ exams.
The Testing Center at the CSM La Plata Campus is the only Pearson VUE authorized test center in Southern Maryland.
