IT Certification

DOD Directive 8570.1

In 2004, DoD released Directive 8570.1, "Information Assurance (IA) Training, Certification, and Workforce Management." The complete Directive and its requirements can be found on the Defense Technical Information Center Web site.

In summary, the Directive specifies the commercial IT certifications that are required for anyone with privileged system access performing IA functions. It requires all all members of the DoD IA workforce to meet the DoD baseline certification requirement by the year 2010.

In addition to being certified to the appropriate baseline certification, IAT personnel must obtain appropriate Computing Environment (CE) certifications as required by employing organization and all IA personnel will need to complete the continuous learning requirements associated with a specific certification to maintain certified status.

Who Needs the Certifications?

This directive applies to all members of the DoD IA workforce, including military, civilians, foreign nationals, local nationals, and contractors, whether the duties are performed full-time, part-time, or as an embedded duty.

What Certifications are Needed?

The certification requirement depends on the person's position and level.

Position Description
Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Anyone with privileged system access performing IA functions.
Information Assurance Management (IAM) Personnel performing management functions for DoD systems (e.g. IA Officers). Also includes Designated Approving Authority (DAA) personnel.

The chart below outlines the certification options that comply with the Directive.  Personnel must hold at least one certification in their appropriate position and level.
